Jane Fonda has addressed her curt response to Megyn Kelly on NBC’s TODAY show.

When Fonda appeared on the show with costar Robert Redford on Wednesday to discuss their new film Our Souls at Night, Kelly inquired about Fonda’s plastic surgery.

“We really want to talk about that right now?” Fonda replied, instantly making headlines.

Later the same day, Fonda and Redford sat down with ET Canada’s Sangita Patel who asked them about the awkward moment. Fonda explained her response and her determination to move on to discussing the film they were promoting.

“Given the fact that we don’t have a lot of time and Bob is right here, it was a weird thing to bring up – whether I’ve had plastic surgery or not,” she said. “I have and I’ve talked about it. But it just seemed like the wrong time and place to raise that question.”

Patel also asked Redford, who previously starred in Barefoot in the Park with Fonda early in their careers, for his take on the moment. He had barely taken notice, he claimed: “It didn’t involve me. Of course, I haven’t had [plastic surgery]. I think Jane didn’t want to go there. I think she didn’t want to have the show turn into about her, her surgery, or her look. It was about the quality of the performance.”

Our Souls at Night debuts on Netflix on Sept. 29.
