Marvel's The Gifted stars debate the merits of having mutant powers

Jamie Chung, Emma Dumont, and creator Matt Nix answer an age-old comic-book question

It’s the classic superhero question: Is it a gift or a curse to have superhuman abilities?

In the video above with the stars of Fox’s X-Men drama The Gifted, Jamie Chung and Emma Dumont debate their answers through their characters’ points of view. Chung plays Blink, a mutant capable of creating flashy portals, but whose distinctive look has always set her apart from humankind. “Blink has been discriminated against and shamed [for] being a mutant, and she’s never been able to integrate into society,” she explains. “She thinks of [her powers] more like a burden.”

Dumont, on the other hand, points out that her character, Polaris, is more than happy to display her powers. Polaris can control magnetism, and she’s proud to be at the forefront of the mutant resistance movement against Sentinel Services. “Polaris has a very distinct view,” Dumont says. “Her core values are very strict, there is no in-between. If you wrong her, she will wrong you… It’s a Scarface mentality.”
