Megyn Kelly invites Matt Lauer, his accusers onto her show

A day after Megyn Kelly admitted that the news of Matt Lauer’s sudden firing from NBC “hit close to home,” she has invited the women who have come forward against Lauer, as well as Lauer himself, onto her show.

“As hard as it is to report on one of our own colleagues, we remain committed to telling people’s stories if they choose to come forward,” said Kelly during Thursday’s episode. “The women in this case, too – the Matt Lauer case – are invited and welcome to do exactly that on this show. We have been that place in all the other cases, and we will be that place – as well as for the accused – on this hour.”

Shortly before making that announcement, she discussed with NBC’s Stephanie Gosk the difficulty of reporting on a case about someone that she interacted with on such a frequent basis.

“You don’t want to be getting that explicit about a colleague that you worked with 24 hours ago,” admitted Kelly. “But that’s how we’re going to report it here for you at NBC because that’s our commitment to you – to bring you the truth and to do a full and fair investigation of this story as it comes to us.”

Lauer was fired on Wednesday after NBC received “a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer.” In the wake of his firing, multiple women came forward with sexual misconduct allegations against Lauer. The disgraced NBC anchor released a statement on Thursday in response to the claims and his termination. “There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions,” Lauer said in the statement, which was read by TODAY co-host Savannah Guthrie on the show’s Thursday broadcast. “To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC.”

He added, “Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly.

“Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I’m committed to beginning that effort. It is now my full time job. The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws. It’s been humbling. I am blessed to be surrounded by the people I love. I thank them for their patience and grace.”
