Riverdale showrunner reveals first concept art for Sabrina spinoff

Something wicked this way comes. Riverdale executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa unveiled the first concept art for the still-untitled Sabrina the Teenage Witch series coming to Netflix — and it’s sufficiently chilling.

The new show is based on Aguirre-Sacasa’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic arc, which sets the spell-casting adolescent against a macabre backdrop of demonic debauchery. The imagery revealed by the showrunner over Twitter depicts Sabrina walking towards a clearing as flames lick the ground of the darkened woods.

“First concept art for #sabrina is coming in and looks FANTASTIC & chilling. Thrilled to be working with [production designer, artist Lisa Soper],” Aguirre-Sacasa tweeted.

Though this is merely a preliminary look at what’s to come, comic book fans should already be pleased with the concept art’s similarity to the work of artist Robert Hack. While Aguirre-Sacasa penned the story, Hack gave the Chilling comic its gothic horror story feel. There were animal sacrifices, Satanic worshiping, cannibalism, and disemboweling going on.

The new Sabrina TV series was in development in September as a proposed companion to Riverdale, which gave a similarly dark, Twin Peaks vibe to the Archie Comics. By December, Netflix announced the project will debut on the streaming platform, backed by a 20-episode, two-season, straight-to-series order.

Aguirre-Sacasa will write and executive producer Sabrina. Lee Toland Krieger will also direct and executive produce with EPs Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater.
