The Fosters to wrap after 5 seasons, spin-off announced

When one door closes for the Adams-Foster clan, another opens. Freeform has announced the end of The Fosters after five seasons, but fans shouldn’t despair: Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez will be getting their own spin-off, EW has confirmed.

The hit series, which kicks off the 10-episode second half of season 5 on Jan. 9, will wrap its run with a three-night limited series event over the summer. With several characters — Callie (Mitchell) and Brandon (David Lambert) — set to graduate high school sometime in the near future, it makes sense that a new chapter would be on the horizon. And, as it stands, the spin-off — which was ordered straight-to-series for 13 episodes — will follow Callie and Mariana (Ramirez) as they continue toward adulthood.

The Fosters celebrated the filming of its milestone 100th episode in early December. “The Fosters is more than just a show,” Karey Burke, executive vice president of programming and development at Freeform, said during a speech at the cake-cutting. “It’s a vehicle for change and our courageous writers and showrunners continue to fight for equality and justice through their fearless storytelling.”

“It’s hard to believe it’s been five years and 100 episodes,” executive producers Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg said in a note to EW. “Feels like just last week we were scouting locations for a little pilot that nobody thought was sell-able, much less that it would run this long. What a privilege to be able to tell these stories, on this family, with this truly brilliant cast and crew. We’re as lucky as you can be.”
