Rita Moreno on the sexual freedom of her One Day at a Time character

Acclaimed actress Rita Moreno stopped by PeopleTV’s new series Couch Surfing to discuss the One Day at a Time reboot on Netflix and revealed the one thing it had to have in order for her to sign onto the project.

“I know she’s supposed to be 77, but I want her to still be sexual,” Moreno recalls telling show creator Norman Leer when accepting the role of Lydia Riera, the outspoken abuelita. The writers took the idea and ran with it.

“She’s shameless; this woman will try to proposition a fencepost,” the EGOT winner says proudly as a clip from the show plays in the background.

Lauding Leer as an “astonishing man with such insight,” Moreno teases at some of the more serious topics the show addresses in season 2. Citizenship, depression, and racial prejudice are among the issues to be tackled by the comedy, which Moreno points out to highlight its versatility.

The original series of One Day as a Time ran from 1975 to 1984. Season 2 of the reboot is currently streaming on Netflix.
