Syfy cancels The Expanse after 3 seasons

While the Internet was mourning the cancelation of Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Thursday night, Syfy quietly confirmed it has canceled one of the best sci-fi dramas to come along in recent years.

The cable network has decided not to renew The Expanse beyond its current third season.

Statement from Syfy: “The Expanse transported us across the solar system for three brilliant seasons of television. Everyone at SYFY is a massive fan of the series, and this was an incredibly difficult decision. We want to sincerely thank The Expanse’s amazing cast, crew and all the dedicated creatives who helped bring James S.A. Corey’s story to life. And to the series’ loyal fans, we thank you most of all.”

The space opera based on James S. A. Corey’s novels is one of the better-reviewed dramas on TV, but is also a relatively expensive show to produce and admittedly isn’t doing well in the ratings.

Producers plan to shop the series around to other possible buyers (Netflix, given its focus on sci-fi programming and bottomless pockets, would seem like the best brand fit).

According to Deadline, which broke the news, The Expanse went from averaging a not-good 1.4 million viewers in season 1, to a definitely not good 1 million viewers in season 2 and then held about the same for the current season — below shows like The Magicians and Krypton.
