John Krasinski is Jack Ryan as you've never seen before: Amazon series trailer

Following in the footsteps of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine, John Krasinski is playing a version of Jack Ryan that we’ve never seen before — and EW has a first look at the new trailer of him in action.

“It’s sort of a prequel to the versions of him that you meet in the movies and books,” co-creator Carlton Cuse (Lost) says of the eight-episode Amazon series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, which follows Jack Ryan in the “critical moment where he goes from being an analyst to being an operative in the CIA.”

Cuse and his co-creator Graham Roland are both longtime fans of author Tom Clancy’s most popular character — Cuse read the novels as a young man, while Roland first found the characters in the films based on Clancy’s books.

“One of the things that separates Jack Ryan from James Bond or Jason Bourne is that he’s infinitely more relatable,” says Roland. “There’s a level of everyman in the character, which I think John has in him as well.”

Casting for the series—which is already renewed for season 2 — took place in almost a dozen countries, resulting in a CIA team that includes Wendell Pierce, Timothy Hutton, and Mena Massoud (a.k.a. the lead of Disney’s upcoming live-action Aladdin). Abbie Cornish costars as Jack‘s doctor fiancée, and The Looming Tower’s Ali Suliman plays the season’s big bad.

“The movies are Jack Ryan-centric, but the novels have all these great characters woven into the narrative, and the show is very much like that,” Roland says.

The co-creators hope they’ve done Clancy, who died in 2013, proud.

“The show hopefully provides you with a better understanding of the root causes that have put us in this position in terms of Islamic terrorism,” says Roland. “Just the way Clancy did.”
