Amazon may be in luck when it comes to casting its planned, $500 million Lord of the Rings series.

Dominic Monaghan, who memorably played Merry in the Peter Jackson-directed film trilogy, says he could conceivably see himself returning to Middle-Earth for the ambitious TV project — depending on what story the streaming giant is cooking up, of course.

“It just depends how they do it, really,” said Monaghan while appearing on the latest episode of PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing. So what would get him back in full hobbit regalia?

“If they do the older hobbits sitting around reminiscing on their journeys, of course I’d do that,” reveals Monaghan. “I love that world and I think introducing new generations to that world only brings them back to the Peter Jackson trilogy, and to the books.”

Of course, Monaghan has yet to hear from Amazon, he tells Couch Surfing host Lola Ogunnaike. And if (as is currently the plan) Amazon plots out the TV show as a prequel to the movies, chances that an older Merry will appear seem slim. If that’s the case, he says, there’s still plenty of joy to be found in looking back on shooting Lord of the Rings.

“It’s a small, independent movie, made in Australia,” he says, cheekily. “They made sure all the hobbits took drugs that shrunk them over the course of a few months, which turned your urine bright blue… which was a bit annoying.”
