Richard Gere makes his TV return in BBC's new MotherFatherSon trailer

After cheating on television with cinema, Richard Gere is back on the small screen in the new trailer for BBC Two’s latest drama MotherFatherSon.

The Golden Globe winner, 69, had parts on Kojack in 1976, as well as 1973’s television event And the Band Played On. He also featured in various documentaries formatted for television, including 2014’s Cosmos docuseries. But MotherFatherSon marks Gere’s most involved stint in the medium.

As Max, described as “a charismatic self-made American businessman with media outlets in London and around the world,” Gere plays the estranged ex-husband to “British heiress” Kathryn (Peaky Blinders‘ Helen McCrory). They have a now-30-year-old son together, Caden (On Chesil Beach‘s Billy Howle), who hopes to follow in his father’s footsteps by running one of Max’s U.K. publications.

As the trailer previews, Caden’s self-destructive lifestyle, which apparently includes something that caused severe brain damage, threatens to unravel everything the family built.

Tom Rob Smith, one of the Emmy-winning writers behind The Assassination of Gianni Versace, created MotherFatherSon and serves as showrunner on the eight-part drama. The cast is rounded out by Sarah Lancashire, Sinéad Cusack, Paul Ready, Pippa Bennett-Warner, Danny Sapani, Joseph Mawle, and Ciarán Hinds.

A premiere date and a U.S. distributor have yet to be announced, but given all the talent involved, it shouldn’t be long now.
