New York Undercover reboot is in the works at ABC

Another series from TV’s yesteryear could be making a comeback on broadcast — and it’s from the bottomless auspices of Dick Wolf.

ABC announced that is developing an update of New York Undercover, Wolf’s old police drama that aired from 1994 to 1999 on Fox. Some of the series’ old cast members are expected to appear in the pilot (Malik Yoba, maybe?) that will begin filming in New York in March.

Here’s the official logline for the 2019 version: “It’s still Hip Hop but New York City has changed. Picking up 20 years after the end of the iconic series that changed the face of TV cop dramas, New York Undercover will follow detectives Nat Gilmore and Melissa Ortiz as they investigate the city’s most dangerous criminals from Harlem to Battery Park.”

The original series starred Yoba as Det. J.C. Williams and Michael DeLorenzo as Det. Eddie Torres, two undercover cops from the NYC’s fourth precinct. The drama was a groundbreaker because it was first police drama to feature two actors of color in the leading roles.

If picked up to series, the revival of New York Undercover would mark Wolf’s first drama at ABC since his 2003 reboot of Dragnet, which only lasted for one season. Ben Watkins (Hand of God) is also listed as an exec producer on Undercover, along with Arthur W. Forney (Law & Order) and Peter Jankowski (Chicago Fire).

In addition to his three Chicago-based procedurals for NBC, Wolf is also making a new Law & Order for the network called Hate Crimes. The New York-set series is based on the real-life NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force.
