Justin Theroux had two different roles on Sex and the City, a rarity for guest-star roles on television.

In season 2 he returned to play a writer with a sexual problem after having already appeared in a different role on the HBO hit’s first season.

Sex and the City was one of those shows that they burned through every actor in the first couple seasons,” Theroux told PeopleTV while sitting down for Couch Surfing. “It’s like Law and Order; it’s kind of a rite of passage.”

After going through so many guest stars, the team asked Theroux to return, but they knew they needed to shake up his look. “They said, ‘We have to figure out a way to make you look different,'” he recalled. “So we were like, ‘Let’s just shave my head and have short hair.’ So that was me diving into the role [laughs].”

Theroux also got to enjoy some time acting opposite Valerie Harper (The Mary Tyler Moore Show) as his mother in the episode, which he described as “dreamy.”
