The Gifted boss says there's 'more to learn' about [SPOILER]'s fate

Tragedy has struck on The Gifted once again.

In Monday's episode, "calaMity," the Purifiers, led by Jace (Coby Bell) and at Benedict Ryan's (Peter Gallagher) behest, launched an assault on the Morlocks' underground hideout. While those with offensive powers tried to hold the militant bigots off, Blink (Jamie Chung) created portals to the surface, where Reed (Stephen Moyer), Caitlin (Amy Acker), Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind), Marcos (Sean Teale), and John (Blair Redford) were waiting to help them escape. Unfortunately, in the ensuing fight, the Purifiers managed to shoot Blink before she made it through the portal and she disappeared, leaving John to believe she died. Or did she?

During a special screening and panel at SCAD aTVfest in Atlanta on Friday, series creator Matt Nix told the audience that Blink's fate isn't so cut and dry.

"It remains to be seen exactly what happens with her," Nix said on the panel, which also featured stars Skylar Samuels, Emma Dumont, and Acker. "You see she disappears into the sort of vortex of the portals at the end. So there's more to learn about that, but yeah, that was definitely a bad day for Blink."

While Blink's fate remains up the air, the same can't be said for Sage (Hayley Lovitt). After Max's (James Carpinello) disappearance (read: death) in the last episode, the Inner Circle was on complete lockdown while Reeva (Grace Byers) and the Frost triplets (Samuels) investigated what happened to him when he left the hideout. During their search, they discovered that Sage used her credentials to access footage of Max. Of course, we know Lorna (Dumont) was actually responsible for that, but she didn't come forward. Convinced that Sage was a traitor, Reeva murdered her. Needless to say, Lorna was devastated because Sage was innocent.

"Emotionally, she's obviously destroyed inside because her one and only friend [is dead]," Dumont said during the panel. "No, that's heartbreaking and it definitely was her fault. Literally the worst possible ramifications or consequences for what she did — I don't think what she did was bad. She was trying to save the world — and it happened in real life."

Thankfully, the episode wasn't all about tragedy. The hour also saw Acker's Caitlin step up and save the day in way. While helping the Morlocks escape, she pulled a gun and shot her way through a police barricade in a pretty badass moment.

"It's been fun to get to see Caitlin step up and get to be part of the fight and sort of push the fight along, and helping Lauren to work on her powers," Acker said of the big stunt. "I'm excited that I'm getting to be in sort of the mutant realm now."

What's interesting about the car sequence, though, is that it was actually shot for episode 15, but then got moved to Monday's episode. "Imagine having to call a director and say, 'Hey, you know that scene that you shot you were so excited about?' 'Yeah, how did it come out? I loved that! With Caitlin and the gun it was so great!' 'Yeah, so we're moving that to another director's episode, so you didn't direct that anymore.'" said Nix. "[Episode 215 director] Scott Peters, he's great a great director, but he was very sad that it didn't land in his episode."

Looking ahead, here's what Nix had to offer about the rest of the season: "The friendship between Esme Frost and Polaris is going to turn out to be absolutely pivotal," he said. "In general, the whole season has been like amping up to major moment of crisis in America and a major moment of crisis for the Strucker family and a major moment of crisis for all these groups, so that's a big thing. I think another thing we'll see is the relationship that's developed over the course of the season between Thunderbird and Erg becomes very important going forward as well."
