Breaking Bad movie starring Aaron Paul will air on Netflix and AMC

The Breaking Bad movie that you’ve heard whispers about now appears to have a home: Netflix and AMC.

The shrouded-in-mystery film that ventures back into the universe of the beloved meth drama will be seen via Netflix, the streaming service that helped break out the show to a bigger audience, and AMC, the network that launched the show and aired all five seasons, EW has confirmed. (Deadline first reported the news.) Netflix will have first rights to the movie — and whether that means that Netflix will place the movie in theaters before putting it on its streaming service is not being revealed — before it goes over to AMC, which, of course, is currently the home for Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul.

The Emmy-winning series, which ran from 2008 to 2013, starred Bryan Cranston as chemistry-teacher-cum-meth-kingpin Walter White and Aaron Paul as his former student and current partner in crime, Jesse Pinkman. The film, which is being written and directed by creator Vince Gilligan and produced by Sony TV, will focus on Jesse, presumably after his escape from Neo-Nazi captivity in the series finale (in which Walt died). News of the movie broke in November, with The Albuquerque Journal reporting that a Bad movie was in the works under the name Greenbrier, and it will “follow the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom,” according to the logline.

Cranston confirmed the existence of a movie later that month, but said that even he was in the dark about the details. “I have not gotten the script, I have not read the script,” he told The Dan Patrick Show. “And so, there’s the question of whether or not we’ll even see Walter White in this movie. Ohhhhh! Think about that one.”

Breaking Bad celebrated the 10th anniversary of its premiere last year, with Gilligan and the cast reuniting in the pages of EW.
