Sharon Horgan, Rob Delaney on Catastrophe's final season: 'We said what we want to say'

As Catastrophe — Amazon’s brilliantly funny and brutally honest take on modern marriage — enters its final season, stars and creators Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney tell EW why they’ve decided to end the show, what viewers have to look forward to in season 4, and how they approach their sex scenes (hint: nothing tender or romantic, please).

“Why are we ending the show? We said what we want to say,” says Delaney. “We had sort of a mission statement for the show and we wanted to express what we had to say about marriage and raising kids and stuff, and I don’t have anything else to say. I would be either repeating myself or coming up with bad story ideas, and then Sharon would chastise and paddle me.”

As for the show’s infamous sex scenes? “We never want the sex to be sexy,” Delaney says. “We never want anyone to look at it and say, ‘Yeah, that’s what I wanna do!’ I would rather them look at it and go, ’Yes, I got a cramp, then I fell over, and then I made that noise.’ We just want people to be more upset and disappointed with their own bodies than they already are.” Adds Horgan: “We wanted to make sure it looked as horrible as it looks in real life. We didn’t want any tender moments. In fact, we have one tender moment in season 4, but then I notice that Rob’s wearing a neck brace and I start laughing.”
