Jane the Virgin boss breaks down the latest Michael twist

Spoiler alert: This post contains plot details from the April 10 episode of Jane the Virgin, "Chapter Eighty-Four."

Michael… is that you?

When Jane the Virgin ended its fourth season with the return of Michael (Brett Dier), there were a lot of questions: Is it really Michael? If so, where has he been? Why is he back now? And in the first three episodes of season 5, we've gotten those answers: Yes, it's really Michael (but he goes by Jason now). He was living in Montana after Rose (Bridget Regan) faked his death and gave him amnesia. Now, he's back because Rose told Rafael (Justin Baldoni) about what she'd done. But that's not all that's happened in the first three episodes.

With Michael's return, Jane (Gina Rodriguez) has put her life on hold in order to do everything she could to get to know, well, Jason. But in episode 3 she realized that it was time to move on with her life. She signed the divorce papers—oh yeah, they were still married—and said goodbye to her husband. But when Jane closed the (literal) door on that chapter of her life, something big happened. Jason—or should we say Michael now?—got his memories back.

"We knew that his memories were going to come back and that that was going to change everything once again," showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman tells EW. "Before that, the challenge was: How do we make it seem as though, if his memories didn't come back, this was a story worth telling on its own? What would it be like for Jane to actually get a moment to say goodbye? And what could Michael get out of the journey if his memories didn't come back, which is knowing that he's a good person and that he deserves happiness? Knowing that they would have this closure, we thought that was a journey worth going on. Because he's better off for having gone through it, and so is Jane."

And yet, despite the closure, this is not the end of their journey. "And then of course we love the moment where everything changes for our characters and suddenly they're going to be in a huge muddy mess again and have to find their way out of it," Urman says.
