A tropical vacation turns batty in exclusive Life in Pieces season premiere sneak peek

CBS’s Life in Pieces is back for its fourth season, and the comedy is headed to Mexico for the big occasion!

Well, kind of.

The Short family — yes, the entire gang — is actually celebrating John (James Brolin) and Joan’s (Dianne Wiest) 50th wedding anniversary, but their Yucatan resort isn’t quite what they expected, as seen in EW’s exclusive preview above.

“It is almost sundown, so it is time for bed,” says property proprietor Hayes (guest star Nat Faxon) as he greets his new guests.

“Wait a minute, we just got here. We haven’t eaten yet,” Greg (Colin Hanks) fires back.

“Which reminds me — no food in the rooms because it will attract pretty much, you know, everything,” warns Hayes, who also can’t find his wife anywhere.

But then, a glimmer of exciting tropical life gives them hope. “Oh, my God, look at those blackbirds flying out of that hole,” an excited Clementine (Hunter King) yells.

“Yes, yes, aren’t they beautiful? Those are vampire bats,” a dry but smiling Hayes states. “Does anybody have any open wounds? I would suggest covering them immediately as you go to your rooms briskly.”

Scorpions, things that go bump in the night, strange bug bites, and more continue to torment the family — well, the ones who don’t secretly leave for better accommodations.

Watch the exclusive clip above for more — perhaps, as Hayes warns, “in pairs, never alone” — and see how the rest of their vacation plays out on the season 4 premiere of Life in Pieces on Thursday, April 18 at 8:30 p.m. ET on CBS, followed by a second new episode at 9:30 p.m. ET (which introduces a character played by star Hunter King’s sister Joey King).
