Lizzie McGuire creator Terri Minsky steps down as showrunner of Disney+ revival

There’s been a big change behind the scenes of the Lizzie McGuire revival.

Original creator Terri Minsky is stepping down as showrunner of the upcoming Disney+ series, EW has confirmed.

“Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement. “After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the series.”

According to Variety, which first reported the news, a new showrunner has yet to be named as replacement and production has been put on pause during the transition. (Lizzie McGuire star Hilary Duff is currently on her honeymoon with new husband Matthew Koma.)

At last year’s D23 Expo, Duff revealed that the beloved Disney Channel series which launched her career back in the ’00s would be revived on the new streaming service Disney+. The revival has been in production since late October, and returning Lizzie McGuire favorites Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine, and Jake Thomas, who played Lizzie’s parents and younger brother on the original series, are reprising their roles. Plus, Lizzie’s BFF-turned-love-interest Gordo (Adam Lamberg) will appear in the new series, marking Lamberg’s highly anticipated return to acting after an extended hiatus.

The new series is to pick up just as Lizzie is about to turn 30. She seemingly has it all — her dream job as an assistant to a fancy New York City decorator, her dream guy (who is shockingly not Gordo!), and a picturesque Brooklyn apartment — but things aren’t always as they seem. With a little help from her friends and her loving family, Lizzie navigates the ups and downs of adulthood as a millennial living in NYC.

“The good news is, just like me and everybody who loved Lizzie and has grown up with her, Lizzie’s also grown up,” Duff previously said. “She’s older, she’s wiser, she has a much bigger shoe budget, which is super-exciting. She has her dream job. She has kind of the perfect life right now… And she’s getting ready to celebrate her 30th birthday.”

A premiere date for the Lizzie McGuire revival has not yet been set.
