Altered Carbon season 2 teaser uploads first look at Anthony Mackie

“This is a ghost story.”

Just a couple weeks out from the premiere of Altered Carbon season 2, Netflix has unveiled the first look at Anthony Mackie as the new “sleeve” for lead character Takeshi Kovacs. The preview comes by way of a teaser video and a stash of eight photos, which also highlights Luke Cage star Simone Missick in her new role.

Joel Kinnaman starred as Takeshi in season 1 of the sci-fi series, but with a story based on the novel by author Richard K. Morgan, the template lends itself to reinvention.

Altered Carbon is set in a future where humanity has developed technology that digitizes consciousness, allowing a person to be transferred to other bodies as needed. Season 2 picks up 30 years after the events of season 1, with Takeshi, the lone surviving soldier from a squad of elite interstellar warriors, recruited back to his home world with the promise of finding his lost love, Quellcrist Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry).

“Technology has conquered death,” Mackie says in the teaser. “But with endless future comes endless past. We are trailed by specters. They cling to us like shadows. But if you chase after your ghosts, you just might become one.”

Altered Carbon now finds Takeshi investigating a new crime that is intertwined with his pursuit of Quell. Among the new faces this season are Missick as Trepp, Power star Lela Loren as Danica Harlan, Jack Ryan‘s Dina Shihabi as Dig 301, Homeland‘s Torben Liebrecht as Colonel Ivan Carrera, and The Terror‘s James Saito as Tanaseda Hideki. Will Yun Lee and James Saito will also recur in season 2, while Chris Connor returns as Takeshi’s A.I. partner Poe.
