UFO cult takes center stage in eerie clip from HBO Max docuseries Heaven's Gate

UFOs, cults, and the largest mass suicide event on American soil all converge in Heaven's Gate: The Cult of Cults, a new docuseries set to debut on HBO Max.

In a new clip from the series, which EW is exclusively debuting above, a man can be heard calling in a group suicide as grainy footage of the Heaven's Gate cult's mansion plays in the background. A clip from a press conference explains that the deceased "may or may not have been influenced, but we'll never know that."

Meanwhile, an unnamed man counters, "These people spent 22 years preparing for what they did, and I wish people would examine that 22-year period instead of just examining their method of leaving."

Heaven's Gate: The Cult of Cults is slated to do exactly that. The series is being described as a thorough examination of the infamous UFO cult through the eyes of its former members and loved ones. What started in 1975 with the disappearance of 20 people from a small town in Oregon ended in 1997 with the largest suicide on U.S. soil and changed the face of modern new age religion forever.

Utilizing never-before-seen footage and first-person accounts, the four-part docuseries explores the infamous UFO cult that shocked the nation with its out-of-this-world beliefs. It is an HBO Max Original produced by CNN and Campfire. Directed and executive produced by Clay Tweel (Gleason), the docuseries is also executive produced by Campfire CEO Ross Dinerstein (The Innocent Man) and Shannon Riggs, with Chris Bannon, Eric Spiegelman, Peter Clowney, and Erik Diehn executive producing for the digital media company Stitcher.

Heaven's Gate: The Cult of Cults is coming later this year to HBO Max.
