Kelly Ripa leaves Live seat to simulate nuclear bomb disaster on air: 'This is not going to help'

Ripa turned the Live With Kelly and Mark set into an emergency preparedness seminar.

Kelly Ripa is perhaps the worst person to ride out a nuclear apocalypse with.

The longtime talk-show cohost turned the set of Live With Kelly and Mark into an impromptu emergency preparedness seminar when she recreated a nuclear bomb disaster from under the series' iconic table.

"In grade school, we would have nuclear drills where if we were under nuclear attack, all we'd have to do to be safe is get under our desk," Ripa said during Wednesday's opening chat. She proceeded to leave her seat and climb under the table beneath her husband and cohost, Mark Consuelos, who laughed at Ripa alongside the studio audience.

"I would get under the desk, and I would always look at the person to my left or right and I would say, 'You know, this is not going to help us. My mom told me this won't help us,'" she said.

When Ripa returned to her seat, Consuelos shifted the energy by recounting a terrifying memory from his Illinois childhood of when a tornado nearly exterminated an entire class of middle schoolers.

"It was in May of 1982. It was a Sunday night. Thank goodness no one was in school, and where they would've sent most of the kids [for a tornado drill], an I-beam went right through that area, so we really dodged a bullet," Consuelos said. "We got a brand-new high school, so they built it with that in mind because we'd get a lot of tornadoes."
