Maryanne Oketch has a breakdown in Survivor deleted scene

The fan favorite tried to make fire in the middle of the night. It didn't go well.

You might think that the hardest weather-related thing about being stuck on a tropical island for Survivor would be having to endure extreme heat and the threat of dehydration. And we have certainly seen instances (Cambodia, anyone?) where that has been a major concern. But the reality is that the much bigger nuisance is not the heat, but the cold.

Viewers were reminded of this fact during this week's episode of Survivor 42 when the platers showed up for a reward challenge in the driving rain, shivering from head to toe. But there was much more to this story that did not make it into the episode.

In an exclusive deleted scene from the episode, one of the peppiest players in the history of the game appears to be almost at her breaking point due to continuous rain that has left both her body and her clothes drenched. "I'm someone who I hate being wet and I hate being cold," Maryanne tells the camera. "And when you can't remember how it feels like to be warm, your morale just continuously goes down."

In an attempt to boost that morale, the tribe works together in the scene to try and make a new fire, but a lack of dry wood combined with cries from the skies keeps defeating their efforts, even when Jonathan starts a flame in a coconut husk before watching it extinguish in the brutal conditions.

"Having the rain just pouring down on you, and not being able to start a fire, and all my clothes are drenched in the freezing cold was one of the hardest days of my life," Maryanne says. And then things get even worse.

While the tribe sleeps, Maryanne goes on a solo mission to try and start up a fire — a solo mission that ends up proving futile, sending the fan favorite spinning. "Yesterday sucked," she begins in between tears. "At 30 minutes of sleep, and the only thing that was keeping me going forward is knowing that tomorrow the sun would have been up and I could dry my clothes and feel warm. And it still rained again, and I tried to get a flame so I could wear some clothes to sleep at night because it's going to be so cold." The scene ends with Maryanne's head buried in her knees.

It is yet another harsh reminder that playing Survivor is not all fun and games, and once again shows what contestants have to endure in their pursuit of a million dollars. (Amazingly, 42 seasons in, there are still casual viewers who think the contestants don't actually sleep out in the elements at night.) The good news is that Maryanne did not break, and she — along with Drea, Mike, Lindsay, Omar, Jonathan, and Romeo — will continue enduring the physical pain for a chance at that huge financial gain.
