Wonder Girl series in development at the CW

The CW is taking another stab at the Wonder Woman mythos: EW has learned that the network has given a script development order for Wonder Girl, based on a forthcoming DC Comics character created by Joëlle Jones. If the show moves forward, it would be the first DC show headlined by a Latinx character.

Executive produced by writer Dailyn Rodriguez (Queen of the South) and Greg Berlanti, the prospective show is centered on Yara Flor, a Latina Dreamer who is the daughter of an Amazonian warrior and Brazilian river god. After learning that she is Wonder Girl, she uses her newfound powers to save the world from forces of evil that seek to destroy it.

This isn't the first time the CW has attempted a young Wonder Woman show. In 2012 — a year after Smallville ended — the CW started developing a show called Amazon, which would've focused on Wonder Woman's early years. However, the network eventually abandoned this project right around the time Arrow and The Flash really started taking off. Given Berlanti Productions' track record with DC characters, it seems as though it's likely that Wonder Girl may actually succeed.

What makes Wonder Girl even more interesting is the fact that Yara hasn't even made her debut in the pages of DC Comics yet. The character is supposed to be introduced as part of the publisher's upcoming line-wide event Future State, which launches in 2021 and explores the state of the DC Universe in the future where new characters have picked up some iconic mantles. An adult Yara is one of those people, having been chosen to become the new Wonder Woman. Yara will be featured in Future State: Wonder Woman, written by Jones, Future State: Superman/Wonder Woman by Dan Watters and Leila del Duca.

Wonder Girl will also be executive produced by Berlanti Productions' Sarah Schechter and David Madden, and produced with Warner Bros. Television. As of right now, it's unclear if Wonder Girl would be part of the Arrowverse, which includes The Flash, Black Lightning, Supergirl, Superman & Lois, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman. If the series moves forward, it would give Berlanti Productions eight superhero shows on The CW, including Stargirl.
