True Blood reboot in early stages with Riverdale creator and NOS4A2 showrunner

Vampers are coming out of the coffin once again.

Six years after True Blood aired its seventh and final season, HBO has put very early plans into motion for a reboot. TV Line was the first to report the news. HBO declined to comment.

Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is spearheading a new interpretation of the show, which was based on author Charlaine Harris's The Southern Vampire Mysteries, with NOS4A2 writer-executive producer Jami O'Brien.

The script from Aguirre-Sacasa and O'Brien was written on spec, and no deals have formally been signed at this time. Although, Alan Ball, the showrunner of the original True Blood, is in the midst of joining as an executive producer.

It's too early in development to tell if any of the original True Blood stars will be returning for the reboot. Anna Paquin starred as telepathic half-fairy waitress Sookie Stackhouse who falls in love with vampire Bill Compton, played by Paquin's future husband Stephen Moyer. The setting of Bon Temps, La., played host to all sorts of magical creatures, including vampires Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) and Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten), werewolf Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello), shifter Sam Merlot (Sam Trammell), and so many more. True Blood premiered in 2008 and aired its series finale in 2014.

Aguirre-Sacasa, who is prepping for the premiere of Riverdale season 5 on the CW and the final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix, is also working on a reboot of Pretty Little Liars for HBO Max.
