Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist season 2 first look reveals Zoey's 'new normal'

The show must go on for Zoey (Jane Levy) in Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist.

EW has your exclusive first look at season 2 of NBC's musical TV series with eight new photos that show what Zoey's "new normal" looks like after the death of her father, Mitch (Peter Gallagher).

The emotional season 1 finale ended with Zoey and the rest of her family — her mother, Maggie (Mary Steenburgen); brother David (Andrew Leeds); and his wife, Emily (Alice Lee) — sitting in silence after Mitch's funeral. But this first look at season 2 reveals that Zoey's superpower of hearing people's inner thoughts and desires through song is turning the volume back up. "Season 2 picks up six weeks after the finale from last season," showrunner Austin Winsberg tells EW. "Zoey is still dealing with the aftermath of her father's death. But she is not in the immediate throes of grief. It felt like we needed some amount of distance to get back into the story."

Winsberg adds that the new season is going to ask questions like, "How do we all move on after tragedy? What does it take to recover after such a big loss? How do we regain our equilibrium and create a 'new normal?' When we started breaking this season, I had no idea just how timely and resonant some of these themes and ideas would be."

And as for Zoey's love life, season 1 ended on a romantic cliffhanger with both Max (Skylar Astin) and Simon (John Clarence Stewart) vying for Zoey's heart. In one of the new season 2 photos, both of her love interests are sitting side-by-side on the couch, looking pretty unhappy. Could that complicated love triangle be why Zoey is hiding underneath a blanket in another photo while her BFF Mo (Alex Newell) gives her some much-needed support and advice?

Also seen in the new photos are Zoey's SPRQ Point colleagues Leif (Michael Thomas Grant) and Tobin (Kapil Talwalkar), as well as season 2's newcomer Harvey Guillén (What We Do In the Shadows) as SPRQ Point employee George. Check out all the first look photos below:
