Quentin Tarantino’s mother responds to his comments: “I support him, I’m proud of him and love him”
The mother of the iconic Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino has responded to his recent comments regarding her lack of support and, in return, his refusal to financially support her.
Allegedly failing to be supportive of his ambitions as a teenager, the now celebrated director recalls one particular experience in which his mother sided with his teachers when he was told off for writing screenplays in class, Tarantino explained to The Moment podcast of his disappointment.
Tarantino reported, after getting into trouble, his mum “was bitching at me about that… and then in the middle of her little tirade, she said, ‘Oh, and by the way, this little ‘writing career,’ with the finger quotes and everything. This little ‘writing career’ that you’re doing? That shit is over'”.
Continuing, he added: “When she said that to me in that sarcastic way, I go, ‘OK, lady, when I become a successful writer, you will never see a penny one from my success. There will be no house for you. There’s no vacation for you, no Elvis Cadillac for mommy. You get nothing. Because you said that'”.
When asked by podcast host Brian Koppelman, co-creator of Billions, whether he had “stuck” to this promise, the filmmaker replied: “Yeah. I helped her out with a jam with the IRS. But no house. No Cadillac, no house”.
The director added: “There are consequences for your words as you deal with your children. Remember there are consequences for your sarcastic tone about what’s meaningful to them.”
Connie Zastoupil, Tarantino’s mother, has now responded to these comments, telling USA Today, “Regarding my son Quentin – I support him, I’m proud of him and love him and his growing new family…It gave me great joy to dance at his wedding and receive his news upon the birth of my grandson Leo”.
Zastoupil then went on to label the treatment of her son’s interview as a “salacious transactional media frenzy,” calling out news outlets and social media platforms who were quick to make an uproar of Tarantino’s comments.
Quentin Tarantino has recently released a novelisation of his 2019 classic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with his upcoming film potentially due to be the very last of his career.
