🥇 Aerleum snatches Gold 🥇 With 144 start-ups from 20 countries participating, Aerleum took home first place in the EDF Pulse Awards 2024! 🏋️♀️ Just in time for the Olympics, Steven and Sébastien took home their own gold medal, winning their category "Developing solutions for carbon capture, utilisation and offsetting”. 🔥 Why now is the best time to build in Geothermal Energy: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺: Global power demand is due to triple by 2050 as electrification grows. Abundant clean electricity is necessary to decarbonise industry, transportation and buildings, along with supporting carbon dioxide removal and desalination. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Geothermal energy offers firm, clean, 24/7 baseload power with a minimal footprint, making it an ideal for consistent and reliable energy production. Only 0.1% of the Earth’s heat content could meet global energy needs for over 2 million years. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁: Geothermal is largely versatile and can provide both power and heat. The Total Addressable Market (TAM) for geothermal includes the global electricity market ($1.6T), space heating ($1.5T), and low-temperature industrial heat markets ($72B). 𝗧𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀: In Europe, feed in tariffs for the electricity generated from renewable sources $278/MWh (Germany) can provide a cushion for high-cost projects. In the US, investment tax credits (ITC) at 30% of CAPEX and Production Tax Credits (PTC) at $27.5/MWh on power produced for the first 10-years of operation will support geothermal projects. 🇺🇸 Recently, our science associates Lipsa Nag, PhD and Walter Johnsen travelled to Dallas, Texas for the ARPA-E summit. Here are some of their takeaways on building moonshot startups that will address climate change: 1. Our decarbonization efforts hinges on low-cost and low-carbon hydrogen. Critical minerals are important for renewable energy generation, energy transmission, and energy storage. 2. Climate technology companies must provide a pain reliever not a vitamin. Deeptech ventures must address a pain that manifests in 5 years that isn’t necessarily visible today. 3. Pilot projects need to demonstrate commercial demand. Startups need to raise more cash than their container size. 4. There’s a capital gap in scaling climate tech. We must provide bridges to bankability through more non-dilutive and private sector financing. 5. Advice from founders and investors: Build relationships early. Everyone you meet can be a potential advisor, partner, hire, etc. 🔥 After ARPA-E, some areas we identified as particularly exciting: next generation solar, efficient thermal storage, new green chemicals and energy storage vectors, biomaterials for building insulation, and highly efficient grid transmission. 🚀 We are excited to partner with exceptionally motivated people who will build and scale these moonshots!
