8 awesome things about the Washington Wizards

To gear up for the NBA playoffs, the For the Win staff is sharing our favorite things about all of the teams that made the postseason. Up next, the Washington Wizards.

8 awesome things about other NBA playoff teams: Heat | Pacers | Raptors | Nets | Hawks | Warriors | Trail Blazers | Rockets

1. As a Reddit user discovered, if each round of the playoffs was decided by head-to-head matchups, the Wizards would emerge as the ultimate victor. (Ties were determined by point differential.)

2. John Wall handles the ball more than anyone in the NBA.

Rick Maese explains in The Washington Post.

He touched the ball 7,622 times this season – more than 500 more than any other player – and on an average night, he’s in possession of the ball for 7.8 total minutes. And before anyone accuses him of hogging the ball, Wall was fourth in the league in passes per game with 70.2.

As John Wall goes, so do the Washington Wizards.

3. Marcin Gortat is just a friendly guy.

The best part of this surprising multi-team huddle is Rajon Rondo’s left arm welcomingly draped around Gortat’s waist.

4. Bradley Beal is so young he grew up idolizing LeBron James.

The Wizards’ 20-year-old star was five when Jordan retired from the Bulls and 10 when LeBron made his debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers  He told Wizards Magazine:

“I never watched Michael Jordan growing up. I grew up and ‘23’ was LeBron. I always knew about Michael Jordan, but I can’t necessarily model myself after him. I always admired LeBron and the way he played all the time when he was in Cleveland.”

5. TV announcer Steve Buckhantz’s “dagger” calls.

Buckhantz wasn’t the first announcer to use the word “dagger” when a player hits a backbreaking shot and, you know what, Fonzie wasn’t the first guy to say “hey” either. Doesn’t matter; Buck owns it.

In addition to drafting Wall and Beal, ditching the purple and going back to the proper white, red and blue color scheme was the best move the franchise made in years.

7. Bullets was a great name with an even better logo.

8. John Wall emerged as a legit superstar who also really loves him mom

When Wall signed a big contract extension earlier this year, he broke down in tears thanking his mom for raising him.
