Poker player parlays crazy World Cup prop bet into spot at WSOP main event final table

Felix Stephensen of Norway will enter the World Series of Poker main event final table on Monday with 32.775 million in chips, which places him second among the nine remaining players. That’s a great position to be in with a $10 million first-place prize going to the winner.

Back in July, when the main event started, Stephensen was one of 6,683 players with a dream. And now, after seven grueling days of play and a four-month hiatus, he finds himself on the precipice of making poker history.

How Stephensen even got the chance to reach this point is kind of mind-blowing.

Here’s what he told WSOP.com when asked what made him decide to travel to Las Vegas to play in the main event in July:

It’s actually kind of a funny story. I have been stuck in London for a while now, and me and a friend bet about $1,000 each on the Netherlands to beat Australia 3-2 (in the World Cup) and we got 60-1 (odds). They beat them 3-2, and we made a lot of money there. So, I just decided let’s go, let’s get out of town, let’s do something fun. And the main event was right around the corner, and here I am.

Wait a minute. Let me get this straight: Stephensen placed $1,000 on a ridiculous prop bet (because, you know, Netherlands should’ve easily beaten Australia in that game). That ridiculous prop bet hit, winning him $60,000. So he decided on a whim, “Hey, I got the money now to buy into the World Series of Poker main event. What the heck, why not?” And now he’s on the brink of turning that prop bet into $10 million.

Nicely done, Felix Stephensen. Nicely done.
