A terrible piece of defending may have just sealed the Premier League for Leicester City

Little Leicester City keep inching relentlessly towards one of the most improbable victories in sports history. Going into Sunday’s game they had just four games left to go, and while overcoming Swansea City wouldn’t have been the most daunting of tasks, they were still capable of causing Leicester trouble in the right circumstances.

But that didn’t happen. Leicester cruised to victory after scoring this early goal off a free kick, made possible thanks to some terrible defensive mistakes from Swansea. Now, Leicester can win the Premier League title with a win at Manchester United next week.

Anyway, here’s the goal.

Let’s break it down.

So far so good for Swansea (the team in white) as they prepare to defend this set piece. If the free kick was kicked right now, three Leicester players would be called for offside.

Then Leicester begin to execute a series of tricks designed to invoke a sense of panic in their opponents. With those three players in the previous frame offside, Leicester sends another player offside in an attempt to draw a Swansea defender.

Swansea’s Ashley Williams falls for it. Shinji Okazaki, the Leicester player who ran offside in the previous frame, slowed down his run and let the onrushing Williams sprint past him, thus rendering every Leicester player onside at the exact time the free kick was kicked.

And, of course, one of those offside-turned-onside players scores.

Come on, Swansea. You’re better than this.
