Dale Earnhardt Jr. turned his gross sandwich into a charity opportunity

The Internet — us included — spent most of Tuesday retching at a photo of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s favorite sandwich, a bananas-and-mayonnaise combination that seemed like an affront to all sandwiches.

But the NASCAR vet saw an opportunity to raise some money where all we saw was a bizarre combination:

He’ll raise money for Blessings in a Backpack — a charity that feeds kids around the country over weekends who “might otherwise go hungry” — with a two-week campaign in which he’ll match up to $50,000. Here’s more from the driver via the Dale Jr. Foundation:

“I was shocked – in a completely good way – at how much attention this picture received Tuesday night. I got a kick out of watching the videos of people trying the sandwich for the first time. Even if they didn’t like it, I appreciated that they gave it a shot. The whole thing got me thinking that whether you like the sandwich or not, perhaps we could make something universally positive from this.”

But will he ask the charity to use his trademark sandwich?

“No, I don’t expect the Blessings in a Backpack folks to pack banana-and-mayonnaise sandwiches in those bags,” he added. “Unless, of course, they want to.”
