Distraught Rays DH went into the stands to check on woman injured by his foul ball

A scary scene unfolded at Tropicana Field on Friday night when a foul ball off the bat of Rays designated hitter Steven Souza Jr. somehow got through a screen of protective netting and struck a woman, who was put on to a stretcher and taken to a hospital.

The second Souza saw what happened, he looked distraught and eventually went into the stands to visit the woman and speak with her. Here’s video of his reaction (it doesn’t have footage of the woman being struck):

Souza sent this tweet and also spoke to reporters about the incident after the game:

But how did the ball get through the additional screens added to Tropicana Field to prevent exactly this kind of incident? It turns out there was a small opening between two sets of netting:
