Philadelphia Flyers goalie Steve Mason lets in the easiest goal of all time

WASHINGTON-Steve Mason is going to want this one back.

Midway through the second period of Game 2 against the Washington Capitals, goalie Steve Mason let in possibly the softest goal of his career.

Jason Chimera tipped in a 100-plus footer from the red line that basically took a walk and strolled into the net via Mason’s five-hole.

Twitter went wild.

Even the NHL account, which tries to maintain some neutrality, got in on it.

Earlier in the game, Mason made an incredible split save to keep the score at 1-0, but a momentary lapse in concentration doomed him on this one.

Chimera’s goal put the Capitals up 2-0 briefly before Jakub Voracek beat Braden Holtby to keep the Flyers within in one in the second period. Goals by Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Bäckström, and John Carlson gave the Capitals a 4-1 win.

Capitals goalie Braden Holtby was the first person to sympathize with Mason over his flueky goal.

“I couldn’t even watch the replay of it,” Holtby said. “As a fellow goalie you never want to see that happen. I’m glad it wasn’t a one goal game in the end. As a team, you want to earn your goals.”

Holtby says Mason’s soft goal will only be more motivation for their next game.

“Weird bounces like that…I feel for him. But, we’re going to have to be extra prepared next game, because he’s an NHL goaltender. He’s mentally tough. He’s going to be coming back with a very good game.”

Flyers coach Dave Hakstol also stood behind his netminder.

“Mason’s been a guy that’s carried us through different parts of this season. He’s been the guy and done a great job for us,” Hakstol said.

The series continues Monday as the Capitals and Flyers meet for Game 3 in Philadelphia.
