WrestleMania 40 results: Night 1 recap

The Rock. Roman Reigns. Cody Rhodes. Becky Lynch.

The WWE’s biggest stars will take the ring on Saturday night in Philadelphia, as WrestleMania 40 begins with Night 1 at Lincoln Financial Field. Three championship titles will be put on the line, and the main event will determine an all-important stipulation for Reigns vs. Rhodes on Sunday.

For The Rock, it’s a return to WWE’s biggest stage for his first real WrestleMania match since 2013. But the biggest question is whether Cody Rhodes can finish his story and dethrone Reigns.

We’ll have all the results from Night 1 as they happen.

Women’s World Championship match: Rhea Ripley defeats Becky Lynch

Rhea Ripley and Becky Lynch kicked off the night in Philadelphia, and though Lynch was able to target and damage Ripley’s injured left arm, Mami held on and finished Lynch with a double Riptide to continue her year-long reign as champion.

A-Town Down Under wins SmackDown Tag Championship, Awesome Truth wins Raw Tag Championship

The six-pack ladder match for the tag titles was an interesting twist. Each set of titles were swinging high above the ring, and even after one of the championships was claimed, the match would continue until both sets were claimed – opening up the possibility that one team could become undisputed champions.

In a match designed to highlight high-risk moment after high-risk moment, A-Town Down Under’s Austin Theory and Grayson Waller claimed the SmackDown belts, while R-Truth scored his first ever WrestleMania victory, claiming the Raw tag titles for himself and The Miz.

This incredible Tommaso Ciampa move from the top of the ladder was the real highlight of the match:

Rey Mysterio and Andrade defeat Santos Escobar and Dominik Mysterio with help from Jason Kelce

Just as Dominik Mysterio was about to hit his dad with a chair, he was stopped by a pair of giant men in Eagles-green masks. That allowed Rey Mysterio to hit his signature 619 on both of his opponents and score the win. The mysterious masked men revealed themselves to be Eagles greats Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson.

Jey Uso defeats Jimmy Uso

With the crowd firmly behind him, Jey Uso turned the tide quickly with a spear to the chest, leading to a top-turnbuckle splash to score the victory. It was a quick finish, but one the fans in Philadelphia loved.

Bianca Belair, Jade Cargill and Naomi defeat Damage CTRL

The Jade Cargill show. As soon as she hit the ring, Cargill overpowered and destroyed the members of Damage CTRL, pinning Dakota Kai in short order to score the victory.

WWE Intercontinental Championship match: Sami Zayn defeats Gunther to become the new champion

Gunther destroyed Sami Zayn physically and even got into a taunting match with Zayn’s wife at ringside, but Zayn pulled off a miracle comeback, stunning Gunther with a high-risk move from the turnbuckle before hitting his signature Helluva Kick to score the pinfall. Gunther was the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history, but Zayn is the new champ.

The Rock and Roman Reigns defeat Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins

In the best match of the night, The Rock and Roman Reigns prevailed in a brutal match that left both Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes battered and depleted for their respective title matches on Sunday. The Rhodes vs. Reigns match on Night 2 will be held under Bloodline Rules, and after Saturday’s setup, will be the most anticipated main event in quite some time as fans wait to see if Rhodes can complete his story.
