On World Biofuel Day, we celebrate the pivotal role of #biofuels in the maritime industry. Peninsula's Biofuels reduce greenhouse gas emissions, can be used on existing engines without engine modifications, contain almost no sulphur and result in simple and safe utilisation onboard, paving the way for a #sustainablefuture. The addition of our latest chemical tanker "Aalborg" to the Port of Barcelona aims to increase and advance the adoption of lower carbon marine fuels in the Western Mediterranean. Our close relationship with the Port of Barcelona and their progressive adoption of alternative fuels has enabled us to establish a fully operational bio supply chain, offering flexibility and a range of bio and traditional fuel blends. These sustainable fuels are #ISCC EU certified, allowing ship owners to comply with FuelEU Maritime regulations, EU ETS reductions, and improve their CII ratings. On Friday, August 16, 2024, Peninsula, in partnership with WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING & TRADING ASSOCIATION (WISTA Singapore) and Singapore Shipping Association’s Youth Executive Group (SSA YEG), will meet to combat plastic waste. We will embark on a kayak expedition in Marina Reservoir to remove waste while learning about the impact of litter on our waters and wildlife while contributing to a cleaner environment.   Why is this event crucial?   - Recycling Gap: Only 9% of all plastic in use worldwide is recycled, despite the theoretical potential for full recyclability. - Single-Use Plastics: Half of all plastic produced is for single-use purposes, commonly found in packaging and serviceware. - Environmental Impact: Plastics contribute 3.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually, outpacing the aviation (1.9%) and shipping (1.7%) industries. - Fossil Fuel Dependency: Plastics, derived from oil and natural gas, are projected to account for half of global oil demand by 2050. - Microplastics Menace: Most plastics in the ocean degrade into microplastics, contaminating our food chain and posing risks to human health. EU ETS Compliance: what does this mean for Peninsula's customers? The EU Emissions Trading System applies to all ships calling at EU ports regardless of the flag they fly or where the owner is incorporated. This means shipping companies must be registered with an administering authority in the EU and report their verified emissions in increasing increments over the coming years. The Day of Santiago, celebrated on July 25th, is a significant event in Spain, honouring Santiago, the Patron Saint of Spain. Santiago, one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus Christ, spent his life spreading the Christian faith across the Iberian Peninsula. After his death in Jerusalem in 44 AD, his disciples brought his body to the Galician coast, where he was ultimately buried in what is now the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. Ninety percent of global goods are transported via sea freight, making the transition to sustainable alternatives and the introduction of #AlternativeFuels a priority. July 15th marks Marine Day in Japan, also known as "Umi no Hi." This national holiday, established in 1996, celebrates Japan's deep connection to the ocean and its maritime heritage. Marine Day has become a cherished tradition, with festivities and customs that families across Japan look forward to each year. Sayaka Kitaura, a Trader in our Tokyo office, highlights the cultural and environmental significance of Marine Day. It's a time to appreciate the ocean's gifts and recognise its critical role in Japan's history and daily life. Communities come together to engage in activities that honour the sea and promote conservation efforts. On this special day, Sayaka enjoys heading to the beach with her family, participating in various seaside activities, and savouring the fresh seafood that Japan is famous for. Reflecting on her favorite Marine Day memory, Sayaka shared: “Marine Day has always been close to my heart because it celebrates our bond with the ocean. Marine Day has become a well-established holiday nowadays, and it is combined with the weekend to allow us a three-day holiday. Some people might go to the beach. For me, when I was a child, our family went on short trips to the seaside every year. My hometown is not by the sea, so I enjoyed it a lot.
