AUGUSTA, Ga. — As a tip to his roots in England, where wagering on everything, including sports, is part of the culture, Justin Rose said he noticed the odds for the 80th Masters.

What caught his eye were the number of players who were 12-to-1 or better (five) and that three others were 15-to-1. “I don’t think that’s been the case in a major championship for a long, long time,” Rose said.

He felt that had answered the question about this Masters being a wide-open affair, with many of the world’s top 10 and top 20 names playing nicely.

That Rose was 25-to-1 didn’t faze him. He said he hadn’t had “any fireworks” thus far in 2016, not like Jason Day, Adam Scott, Bubba Watson and Jordan Spieth — all winners, all at 12-to-1 or better — but the Englishman smiled. He loves the wide-open landscape and knows the temperature of his season can change in a hurry.

“The last couple of weeks, I’ve felt great and been able to get back to a full practice schedule,” Rose said. “I’ve seen the difference in that. Hopefully from this point on, things will start to really get hot.”

Having won the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion, Rose has the game to win at Augusta. He’s made the cut in each of his 10 starts and among his three top 10 finishes is last year’s share of second behind the winner, Jordan Spieth.

“At the 16th green, I had a putt to get to 16 under,” Rose said, “and that level of performance obviously would have won many major championships. Essentially, I was beaten by an all-time great performance.”

Indeed, Rose (and Phil Mickelson) were beaten by Spieth at 18 under, which tied the lowest 72-hole score in Masters history. “I take a lot of confidence from that,” Rose said.

Would he take another 272 right now?

“For the next 10 years, sure. Absolutely, I sure would,” Rose said, confident that 16 under would on most years would win.

Remember, he’s a man who studies the odds.
