Tiger Tracker: Shot by shot recap of Tiger Woods' wild Saturday at Genesis Open

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Tiger Woods made a stunning charge to start Round 3 of the Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club. Woods opened birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie and is suddenly in contention at T-14 and 6 under par.

Woods and the rest of the field will resume Round 3 at 9:45 a.m. ET Sunday morning.

Round 3

Hole No. 17: Par 5, 563 yards

OFF THE TEE (8:40 p.m.): Don’t know if they’ll be able to finish this hole or not but Tiger just teed off and hit a beauty down the fairway. Rapidly running out of daylight.

SECOND SHOT (8:44 p.m.): Well that’s his first loose swing of the day, hated it as soon as it left the club and it ended up left rough short of the green. Wasn’t all that costly though, should have a decent chance to get up and down.

AROUND THE GREEN (8:48 p.m.): Looked like he caught it clean but the chip still landed well short of the green. Maybe misjudged it in the dark. Horn should blow any second now.

ON THE GREEN: Tiger opts to mark it and this is where we’ll pick things up bright and early tomorrow morning.

Hole No. 16: Par 3, 153 yards

OFF THE TEE (8:29 p.m.): Throws a 7-iron in there on a really nice line but long of the hole and it didn’t really check. Might make for a tough one coming back.

ON THE GREEN (8:36 p.m.): Barely touched that putt it was so speedy. Pace was fine, can’t get it to fall but that’s another par on what might be the last hole of the night.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 7 (6 overall)

Hole No. 15: Par 4, 487 yards

OFF THE TEE (8:11 p.m.): Nothing wrong with that tee shot and he’s on the left side of the fairway, about 192 yards out. So dialed in with the irons right now, expectations for this shot are high.

APPROACH SHOT (8:18 p.m.): That’s a good one. Really tough hole and he’s safely on the green and pin high with a 5-iron. Long roll coming up but the way he’s been putting the last few holes …

ON THE GREEN (8:24 p.m.): Had to hammer that one and still leaves it a touch short. Shouldn’t be a problem for a tap-in par. Thinking one or two more holes and that’s it for tonight.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 6 (6 under overall)

Hole No. 14: Par 3, 193 yards

OFF THE TEE (7:58 p.m.): Goes with 5-iron and whattaya know, he’s on the green with a chance at another birdie. Such a shame we can’t see this round through tonight.

ON THE GREEN (8:05 p.m.): Well that was some kind of run. Misses the birdie and taps in for par. Suddenly Woods is in serious contention with a lot of golf left this weekend. Buckle up.

TIGER ON THE ROUND: 5 under thru 5 (6 under overall)

Hole No. 13: Par 4, 471 yards

OFF THE TEE (7:37 p.m.): That’ll work. Got a nice kick in the fairway and this is some kind of show he’s putting on late Saturday in L.A.

APPROACH SHOT (7:45 p.m.): That’s a 6-iron to about 10-12 feet and if he makes that putt this place is going to go absolutely insane. Could be watching something special right now.

ON THE GREEN (7:52 p.m.): MADE IT. C’mon, this is getting out of hand. That one was from 10 feet and puts him to T-12 (!).

TIGER ON THE ROUND (7:54 p.m.): 5 under thru 4 (6 under overall).

Hole No. 12: Par 4, 474 yards

OFF THE TEE (7:20 p.m.): Probably has some adrenalin going after that eagle putt and he misses with driver in the right rough.

APPROACH SHOT (7:27 p.m.): Alright, good iron shot from 196 yards out and he’s gonna have yet another birdie look when he gets up there. This is some kind of start after a nearly 7-hour break.

ON THE GREEN (7:31 p.m.): MADE IT. This is ridiculous. Another birdie, this one from 24 feet. Birdie-eagle-birdie to start the day. Think he’s feeling it at Riv right now?

TIGER ON THE ROUND: 4 under thru 3 (5 under overall)

Hole No. 11: Par 5, 570 yards

OFF THE TEE (6:59 p.m.): Great one. Carried it 290 yards with driver up the right side of the fairway and will have another good birdie opportunity coming up. Looks like a beautiful afternoon at Riv, exact opposite from the conditions Woods played in yesterday.

SECOND SHOT (7:08 p.m.): Woah! Just stuck it to five feet for eagle from 249 yards out with a fairway wood. Simply can not do it any better than that, what a shot.

ON THE GREEN (7:13 p.m.): Count it. That’s an eagle for Woods and suddenly he’s inside the top-20! Huge smile on his face now after the birdie-eagle start.

TIGER ON THE ROUND: 3 under thru 2 (4 under overall)

Hole 10: Par 4, 284 yards

OFF THE TEE (6:45 p.m.): Looked like it was on a good line most of the way and ended up left of the green. That’ll be fine. Should have about two hours of daylight left so we’re looking at maybe seven or eight holes tonight and another early morning Sunday.

AROUND THE GREEN (6:50 p.m.): Beauty. Popped it up on the green and looks to have about 5-6 feet remaining for birdie.

ON THE GREEN (6:56 p.m.): Yup. Made birdie here twice yesterday and does it again with that 5-footer. Good start.

TIGER ON THE ROUND: 1 under thru 1 (2 under overall)

Pre-round

Tiger Woods made a 24-foot birdie putt on his final hole of the second round to get to 1 under for the week and inside the cut line at present time.

Now Woods will wait and see if 1 under is good enough to make it to the weekend. There’s a big wave of players who still need to play their entire second round this afternoon, after which players who make the cut will begin Round 3.

With a full wave of players just starting Round 2, Woods likely won’t know for sure if he makes the cut until approximately 5 p.m. ET at the earliest. If he does, we’ll be back tracking his third round right here.

Round 2

Hole No. 9: Par 4, 467 yards

OFF THE TEE (11:15 a.m.): Safely in the fairway but 193 yards out and most likely needs a birdie here to make the cut. Shot of the week coming up.

APPROACH SHOT (11:20 a.m.): Carried a 4-iron long of the hole, but he’ll at least have a look at a putt to get back to 1 under for the week.

ON THE GREEN (11:24 a.m.): Get outta here. He made it. Must-make birdie to have a chance at the cut and he made the birdie roll from 24 feet. Unbelievable. Now he sits and waits to see if 1 under will be good enough to make the cut. What a finish.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even par thru 18 (1 under overall)

Hole No. 8: Par 4, 436 yards

OFF THE TEE (10:57 a.m.): Pulls driver and it’s a good one, safely on the left side of the fairway. Has 169 yards for his second shot and made birdie here yesterday, let’s see if he can do it again.

APPROACH SHOT (11:01 a.m.): On the green but another lengthy birdie putt coming up. Definitely going to get aggressive with it given the circumstances.

ON THE GREEN(11:07 a.m.): No dice from 30 feet. Another par and now almost certainly needs to birdie the last to have any chance at making the cut.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 17 (Even overall)

Hole No. 7: Par 4, 394 yards

OFF THE TEE (10:40 a.m.): Middle of the fairway and will have his first good look from the fairway this morning, 134 yards out. Now would be a good time to stick one close.

APPROACH SHOT (10:44 a.m.): Bad beat. Another yard or two and that shot would have been perfect, but lands it just short of where it needs to be and the ball nearly rolls off the green entirely and down the slope. Not what he needed.

ON THE GREEN (10:48 a.m.): Putting from the fringe and had caddie Joe LaCava take a long look at that one, but it’s another miss and a third consecutive par. Needs at least one birdie in his last two holes, maybe two. Not ideal.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 16 (Even overall)

Hole No. 6: Par 3, 182 yards

OFF THE TEE (10:29 a.m.): Put it on a good line and safely on the green, but it’s above the hole. Gonna be a quick downhiller for his birdie try.

ON THE GREEN (10:35 a.m.): Big right-to-left breaker and Woods misses on the pro side. Stopped the bleeding with two straight pars but running out of holes now.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 15 (Even overall)

Hole No. 5: Par 4, 415 yards

OFF THE TEE (10:14 a.m.): Goes with fairway wood and misses in the left rough. Short par-4 but still going to be a tough second shot from that spot.

APPROACH SHOT (10:18 a.m..): Distance was good but the ball still had a lot of check on it coming out of the rough. Landed hole high and spun back a bit, birdie putt from the fringe coming up.

ON THE GREEN (10:24 a.m.): Gave it a run but doesn’t drop. Makes the short par putt and he’s going to have to get aggressive over the next few holes for sure.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 14 (Even overall)

Hole No. 4: Par 3, 218 yards

OFF THE TEE (10:03 a.m.): Not the easiest shot to hit first thing in the morning and Woods misses the green into the left rough. Going to be a tough up-and-down just to save par now, and Woods needs birdies this morning to have a good chance at making the cut.

AROUND THE GREEN (10:06 a.m.): Little long on that chip and a grimace from Woods as he’s going to have a speedy, downhill putt to save par coming up.

ON THE GREEN (10:10 a.m.): Ouch. Missed it on the low side and Woods falls back to even par for the tournament. That’s three consecutive bogeys on the round and he’ll probably need to play the next five holes in at least 1 or 2-under par in order to make the cut.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 13 (Even overall)

Pre-round

Tiger Woods is 1 under par and on the cut line with six holes to play in Round 2 of the Genesis Open Saturday at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. His second round continues at 10 a.m. ET Saturday morning, and we’ll be tracking all the action shot by shot right here.

Woods played 30 holes Friday due to previous weather delays and carded a 1-under 70 in the opening round. Woods teed off on No. 10 to start Round 2 and got to 3 under overall with an eagle at the par-5 first hole. He fell back to the cut line with consecutive bogeys before the horn blew and play was suspended for the night due to darkness.

Woods’ ballstriking was on point for much of the day and he hit 17 of 18 greens in Round 1. He also had four three-putts in the opening round to match a career high.

Woods is currently nine shots off the lead at T-55 and will begin Round 3 Saturday afternoon if he makes the cut.
