Gallery Spotlight: YVONNE FANG
Dream Field

July 26 - September 1, 2024

Gray Area is pleased to present the debut solo show of Gray Area Cultural Incubator Member Yvonne Fang. On view from July 26 - September 1, by appointment, this focus exhibition presents Fang’s latest work Dream Field (2024), which highlights the artist’s multi-layered explorations in artificial intelligence and simulation.

In Fang’s fictional universe, an AI with self-determination has created its own world—a simulated version of the earth where the AI can finely control the virtual ecosystem to maintain ecological balance. Through a real-time video feed, the audience’s faces are translated into virtual creatures. By stepping in front of the AI’s lens, humans can see what their more efficient interspecies role would be in this idealized environment. Blurring the semantic divide between man, machine, and environment, Dream Field invites viewers to confront their own roles within ecological systems.

The Vitruvian Code

August 6 - 9, 2024

The Vitruvian Code is a creative artificial intelligence and data project that explores the timeless genius of Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man in dialogue with the concept of non-binary human design. Aiming to emphasize the enduring value of human-to-human connection in an era of rapid technological advancement, the piece leverages the symbolic power of Da Vinci's work to remind audiences of the beauty and strength inherent in human interaction.

In contrast, The Vitruvian Code asserts that while artificial intelligence can mimic human communication, it should not undermine human interaction—the artists the creators of digital information are humans. As AI technology advances, the value of human connections and interactions becomes more crucial than ever. This piece reminds us of the spiritual and material aspects of humanity, advocating for AI to support, rather than replace, human communication.

Gray Area Opens New Gallery Space August 25, 2022 with Inaugural Exhibition

We're thrilled to announce the opening of the new Gray Area Gallery on August 25, 2022, a permanent exhibition space located within Gray Area's current home in the MIssion District's Grand Theater.

Gray Area was originally launched in 2006 by Founding Executive Director Josette Melchor as Gray Area Gallery in San Francisco's South of Market (SoMa) to showcase technology-driven art. The Gallery transformed into the Gray Area non-profit in 2008, and exhibited works by seminal new media artists including Casey Reas, Aaron Koblin, Camille Utterback, and STAMEN Design. During this time, the space quickly became a cultural community center, developing notable civic engagement programs activating communities to respond to local urban issues, and expanding with educational programs, research, and live performances.

The new Gray Area Gallery continues the tradition of making genre-bending work accessible to the public. In tandem with broader Gray Area thematic initiatives, the first year of gallery curation will center on the complicated tensions and surface areas between identity, representation, expression, oppression, and technology.
