Powell, Jalen Nailor and Trent Sherfield are the leading candidates for the No. 3 receiver role after the Vikings did not take a wide receiver in the 2024 Draft, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. It was a mild surprise the Vikings didn't draft a wide receiver after the departure of K.J. Osborn (New England) in free agency, leaving Powell as the leading candidate for the No. 3 receiver role. The Vikings could add a veteran free agent later this spring to compete for the job. Whoever wins the role could get a significant number of targets early in the season with tight end T.J. Hockenson likely to miss several games in coming back from January surgery for a torn ACL.

Brandon Powell Latest News
Leading No. 3 WR candidate
![Team logo](https://cdn.statically.io/img/heavy.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/minnesota-vikings-logo.png?w=150)
Staying in Minnesota
![Team logo](https://cdn.statically.io/img/heavy.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/minnesota-vikings-logo.png?w=150)
Powell agreed to terms Tuesday to re-sign with the Vikings on a one-year contract, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. Powell has more punt returns (86) than catches (76) in 61 career games, but he did a nice job filling in on offense last year when Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison or K.J. Osborn weren't available. Osborn now appears headed for free agency, potentially giving Powell a better shot at the No. 3 receiver role, albeit in a Minnesota offense that won't have QB Kirk Cousins.
Three receptions in loss
![Team logo](https://cdn.statically.io/img/heavy.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/minnesota-vikings-logo.png?w=150)
With the return of K.J. Osborn from a concussion, Powell moved into the third receiver role and played on 44 of the offense's 75 snaps (compared to Osborn's 71 snaps). However, Powell was targeted more than Osborn (1 catch for seven yards on two targets) as he appears to have a strong rapport with quarterback Josh Dobbs. Powell's role should shrink to the fourth receiver role soon with Justin Jefferson close to returning from a hamstring injury.
Two touches in Sunday's win
![Team logo](https://cdn.statically.io/img/heavy.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/minnesota-vikings-logo.png?w=150)
Powell left briefly due to an injury but was able to return. He played on 37 of the offense's 72 snaps as he continues to work as the third receiver with Justin Jefferson on injured reserve. It's possible Jefferson could return in Week 10, so Powell may return soon to a smaller role.
