Justice Hill Latest News
Joined by No. 1 option in backfield
Hill is part of a backfield that's being joined by Derrick Henry on a two-year contract and slated to see both J.K. Dobbins (Achilles) and Gus Edwards depart, sadgasg reports. Brian Wacker of the Baltimore Sun reports. The Ravens are set to add a true No. 1 running back in Henry, whose size and power will complement Lamar Jackson's elusiveness, while Dobbins is scheduled for free agency and Edwards has agreed to a contract with the Chargers. Hill is coming off a career year himself, and his pass-catching skills should also allow him to spell Henry efficiently. It's possible, though, that Keaton Mitchell (knee) becomes the Ravens' preferred No. 2 option once fully recovered from his torn ACL, as long as he doesn't lose a step. Hill can be cut with a potential 'out' heading into the final year of his contract for only $500,000 in dead money, which could be a situation worth monitoring.
Effective in limited role
Hill's role remains diminished with Keaton Mitchell's ascent in the offense as the veteran played just 29 percent of the snaps Sunday. He has not played more than 30 percent of the snaps since Week 9 against the Seahawks. Hill was effective on a per-carry basis against the Chargers, but there appears to be a cap on his weekly volume projection with Mitchell, Gus Edwards and Lamar Jackson taking on the bulk of the backfield work. The Ravens are on a bye in Week 13 before returning to action Dec. 10 against the Rams.
High snap count, low production Sunday
While Hill led the team in carries and played the most snaps among running backs, he finished fourth on the team in rushing yardage. Gus Edwards was strong on a per-play basis, rushing for 52 yards and two touchdowns on five carries. However, it was rookie Keaton Mitchell who stole the show and may post the biggest threat to Hill's role going forward. Mitchell took nine carries for 138 yards and a touchdown in his first significant workload of the season. Hill has been solid to this point with a 4.3 YPC average and 15 catches on 16 targets, but Mitchell's emergence Sunday could alter Baltimore's backfield calculus down the stretch. Baltimore hosts a tough Cleveland defense in Week 10.
Ties for team receiving lead
Hill watched Gus Edwards rumble for three touchdowns but contributed out of the backfield in passing situations, tying Mark Andrews for the team lead in receiving yards as Lamar Jackson threw for only 157 yards. Hill has topped 30 scrimmage yards in each of his last six games played, and he set a new season high in that category here, topping his Week 2 total by two yards.
