Latest Pistons News
Simone Fontecchio : Staying in Detroit
Fontecchio (toe) has re-signed with the Pistons on a two-year, $16 million deal, James L. Edwards III of The Athletic reports. Fontecchio posted solid numbers with Detroit last season and will get another chance to impress in Motor City. The 28-year-old was acquired by the Pistons via trade with the Jazz in February and averaged 15.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.9 steals in 30.2 minutes for Detroit while starting in nine of 16 appearances. He's expected to be healthy come training camp in the fall.
Tobias Harris : Agrees to deal with Detroit
Harris and the Pistons agreed to a two-year, $52 million deal Monday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports. The writing has been on the wall for a while for Harris in Philadelphia, and the Pistons have long been rumored to be an admirer of the forward. Getting Cade Cunningham some veteran leadership and shooting was a priority, and the Pistons did exactly that with this move. In 2023-24, Harris produced averages of 17.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.3 three-pointers over 70 regular-season games.
Cade Cunningham : Set to sign five-year extension
Cunningham (knee) agreed Sunday with the Pistons on a five-year, $226 million max extension, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. Cunningham has been a bright spot for the Pistons since being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He missed most of the 2022-23 campaign due to a left shin injury, but he bounced back in 2023-24, averaging 22.7 points, 7.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 33.5 minutes per game over 62 appearances. He missed the end of the season due to left knee tendinopathy but should be back to full health for the start of training camp.
Stanley Umude : To become free agent
The Pistons declined Umude's (ankle) team option for the 2024-25 season Saturday, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports. Umude missed the end of the 2023-24 season with a hairline fracture in his ankle, and a timetable isn't currently known. Umude will now have to test the open market as a free agent after making 24 appearances with the Pistons last season with averages of 5.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.0 three-pointers.
Troy Brown : Cut loose by Detroit
The Pistons will waive Brown on Saturday, James L. Edwards III of The Athletic reports. Brown's $4 million salary for the 2024-25 season would have become fully guaranteed if he remained on the roster by Sunday, and the Pistons weren't interested in keeping him around at that price. The 24-year-old forward has bounced around with five teams over the past four seasons and will now be seeking out a new home in free agency. After being acquired via trade with the Timberwolves in February, Brown averaged 4.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists across 19.0 minutes in 22 appearances for the Pistons.
Simone Fontecchio : Gets qualifying offer from Detroit
The Pistons extended a $5.22 million qualifying offer to Fontecchio (toe) on Saturday, making him a restricted free agent, Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press reports. The transaction allows Detroit to match any offer sheet that Fontecchio might sign with another team, but he'll most likely work out a deal with the Pistons beforehand. The 28-year-old was acquired by the Pistons via trade with the Jazz in February and averaged 15.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.9 steals in 30.2 minutes for Detroit while starting in nine of 16 appearances. Fontecchio underwent surgery on his left big toe in May and is expected to be fully cleared ahead of training camp.
Evan Fournier : Team declines option
The Pistons have declined to pick up Fournier's $19 million team option, James L. Edwards III of The Athletic reports. This was the expected move, as Fournier was not expected to be a part of Pistons' future plans at his price tag. The veteran wing was on the outside looking in on the Knicks' rotation last season before being dealt to Detroit prior to the deadline. He then averaged 7.2 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 triples across 18.7 minutes in 29 games with the team. It remains to be seen what type of opportunities will come his way in free agency.
Tim Hardaway : Sent to Detroit
The Mavericks traded Hardaway and three second-round picks to the Pistons on Friday in exchange for Quentin Grimes, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports. Hardaway was a consistent contributor for Dallas over the past five seasons, and he maintained his production during the 2023-24 campaign despite coming off the bench in most appearances. Over 79 regular-season appearances last year, he averaged 14.4 points and 3.2 rebounds in 26.8 minutes per game, but his role decreased once the playoffs began. Hardaway should be able to carve out a decent role on the wing with the Pistons after Dallas elected to move on from him, largely to clear some cap space.
