Latest Lakers News
Bronny James : Out Sunday with swelling in knee
James will be held out of Sunday's Summer League matchup versus the Warriors due to swelling in his left knee, Mike Trudell of Spectrum SportsNet reports. James tallied four points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal on 2-for-9 shooting in his Summer League debut Saturday. The 19-year-old will be held out of Sunday's back-to-back as a precaution. However, James is expected to suit up for the Lakers' Summer League game against the Heat on Wednesday.
Bronny James : Inks four-year deal
James signed a four-year, $7.9 million contract with the Lakers on Tuesday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. Per Michael Scotto of USA Today, the first two seasons of James' deal are fully guaranteed, while the rookie second-round pick has a partial guarantee of $1.3 million for the third year of the deal. The fourth year, meanwhile, is a $2.49 million team option. The contract ensures that James will be part of the Lakers' 15-man roster to open the upcoming season, but the 19-year-old will still face an uphill battle to break training camp with a regular spot in head coach JJ Redick's rotation. James will don purple and gold for the first time Saturday, when he's scheduled to play for the Lakers' entry in the California Classic Summer League.
Jalen Hood-Schifino : Won’t play in Summer League
The Lakers announced Tuesday that Hood-Schifino (back) isn't on the team's Summer League roster, Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times reports. Hood-Schifino underwent a lumbar microdiscectomy surgery in March to repair a bulging disc in his back and appears to still be recovering. While the second-year guard isn't expected to play in the Summer League, it is unclear if he will be healthy to begin the 2024-25 regular season.
Max Christie : Staying in L.A. on four-year deal
Christie agreed Sunday with the Lakers on a four-year, $32 million deal, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports. After tending a qualifying offer to Christie, the Lakers had the right to match any offer the young guard might have received as a restricted free agent, but the two sides worked quickly to come to terms on a new deal. The 21-year-old appeared in 67 games (seven starts) in his second NBA season in 2023-24, averaging 4.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 14.1 minutes. He fell out of the rotation during the postseason, but the Lakers' financial commitment to Christie likely suggests he's expected to become more of a key cog on the second unit in 2024-25.
Cam Reddish : Exercises player option
Reddish (ankle) exercised his $2.46 million player option for the 2024-25 season Saturday, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports. Reddish had the worst statistical year of his career in 2023-2024, during which he averaged 5.4 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals across 20.5 minutes in 48 regular-season games. The 24-year-old has bounced around of late, playing for four different teams over the last three years. Reddish has failed to live up to his draft stock, and he will hope to improve next season before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2025-26.
Max Christie : Gets qualifying offer
The Lakers tendered a qualifying offer to Christie on Saturday, making him a restricted free agent, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports. By extending Christie a qualifying offer, the Lakers will have the ability to match any offer the 21-year-old guard might receive from another team in free agency. The 21-year-old appeared in 67 regular-season games in his second NBA campaign in 2023-24, averaging 4.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.9 assists across 14.1 minutes per game.
D'Angelo Russell : Staying in L.A.
Russell said Friday that he will exercise his $18.69 million player option for 2024-25 to remain with the Lakers, Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com reports. Though Russell disappointed in the Lakers' five-game first-round playoff series loss to the Nuggets, he delivered a strong 2023-24 season overall, fueled by a strong close to the campaign once he moved back into a starting role in mid-January. In 76 appearances for the Lakers, Russell averaged 18.0 points on 45.6 percent shooting from the field, 6.3 assists, 3.1 rebounds, 3.0 three-pointers and 0.9 steals in 32.7 minutes. Though Russell once again projects to slot in as the Lakers' starting point guard under first-year head coach J.J. Redick, the 28-year-old's expiring contract could make him vulnerable to a trade if Los Angeles seeks an upgrade at the position as the 2024-25 season unfolds.
Jaxson Hayes : Picking up player option
Hayes informed the Lakers on Friday that he will exercise his $2.4 million player option for the 2024-25 season, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. Hayes likely would have been on track for a one-year contract at a similar salary level in free agency had he declined the option, so he'll stick around in Los Angeles with the hope that he can solidify himself as the top backup center under first-year head coach JJ Redick. Previous coach Darvin Ham deployed Hayes as Anthony Davis' primary backup in 2023-24, though the Lakers were without Hayes' main competitors for the position -- Jarred Vanderbilt and Christian Wood -- for much of the season due to injury. Vanderbilt and Wood are both healthy again and are under contract for the upcoming season, so Hayes could struggle to reach the 70 appearances and 12.5 minutes per contest he averaged in 2023-24.
