Cooper logged a strong showing during mandatory minicamp in June and is trending toward securing a first-team role for training camp, Mike Spofford of the Packers' official site reports. Cooper, a rookie second-round pick, has a clear path to the Packers' starting middle linebacker spot following the departure of De'Vondre Campbell, so it's encouraging to already see him impressing his new coaching staff. Coach Matt LaFleur praised "how engaged [Cooper has] been and how locked in he's been throughout the course of the offseason," and by all accounts it looks like the former Texas A&M standout is quickly acclimating to new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley's scheme. At 6-foot-2, 229 pounds, Cooper is slightly undersized compared to 2022 first-round pick Quay Walker, but he boasts enough athleticism to lean on as he bulks up. Veterans Isaiah McDuffie and Eric Wilson and rookie third-rounder Ty'Ron Hopper project to round out Green Bay's linebacker corps alongside Cooper and Walker.

Packers Pregame Probabilities
Check back soon for fresh projections!
Latest Packers News
Edgerrin Cooper : Making good impression early
James Turner : Gets new NFC North home
Turner was claimed off waivers by the Packers on Thursday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Turner inked a deal with the Lions as an undrafted free agent shortly after the 2024 NFL Draft, but he was ultimately waived earlier in the week. He will now stay within the division and relocate to Green Bay where they already roster two kickers in Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph. The former had an up-and-down season as a rookie in 2023 and will now have to compete against both Joseph and Turner for the kicking job entering the upcoming season.
Jordan Love : Extension could come before camp
Love said Tuesday that he's optimistic he and the Packers will agree to terms on a new contract extension before the start of training camp July 22, Matt Schneidmanof The Athletic reports. Love, who has participated in the entirety of Green Bay's offseason program, didn't go into detail about his ongoing contract negotiations, but he did answer "yes" when asked whether he felt a deal would be finalized before camp. The 2020 first-round pick is coming off a breakout 2023 campaign and entering the final year of his current contract, and while his attendance has been crucial for a young offense now working to take the next step, it's possible that Love would refuse to suit up for preseason action if he were still without a long-term deal come August. By the sound of things, though, he and the Packers may not be far apart in negotiations.
Josh Jacobs : Back to all activity
Jacobs (hamstring) took part in Tuesday's practice, Ryan Wood of USA Today reports. Jacobs missed the first week of Packers OTAs due to a hamstring injury, but he was back on a limited basis by the second week before logging time with the first-team offense during the first session of mandatory minicamp this week. On Tuesday, he displayed his agility during early drills while also working on his pass protection, per Wood. Jacobs arrived in Green Bay this offseason on a four-year, $48 million contract, effectively replacing Aaron Jones as the team's top running back. The Packers then re-signed AJ Dillon and added MarShawn Lloyd in the third round of this year's draft to provide depth behind Jacobs, who averaged 20.6 touches per game in his five seasons with the Raiders.
Bo Melton : Making case for role again
Coach Matt LaFleur recently praised Melton's speed, run-blocking, consistency and work ethic, Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal reports. LaFleur referred to Melton's speed as an "elite trait" and said it was a "great story" to see the 2022 seventh-round pick go from Seattle's practice squad to Green Bay's practice squad to topping 100 yards in a crucial Week 17 win last season. Melton was back down to fifth on the depth chart for the playoffs with Green Bay's top four WRs all healthy, but it's telling that the team still gave him some snaps on offense (39 in two playoff games, including a 19-yard TD catch) when there was so much on the line and injuries didn't force things. His combination of 4.34 speed and toughness/discipline seems to have won LaFleur over, and Melton's popularity among Packers fans will only continue growing after his recent revelation that he can't stop eating cheese curds even though they make his stomach hurt.
Lukas Van Ness : Back at practice
Van Ness (thumb) returned to practice at OTAs on Tuesday, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports. Van Ness missed some time while recovering from a thumb fracture, but he's already back on the field. The 2023 first-round pick is coming off a rookie campaign in which he racked up 32 tackles (24 solo) and four sacks across 17 regular-season appearances.
Kitan Oladapo : Hopes to be ready by training camp
Oladapo (toe) is wearing a walking boot Thursday and said he expects to be back for training camp, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports. Oladapo, a rookie fifth-round pick, is recovering from surgery undergone to address a broken toe he said he suffered at the NFL Scouting Combine. Though Oladapo missed OTAs and looks like he'll also sit out all of mandatory minicamp, it will be encouraging if he's able to get back on the field for training camp as a full participant.
Lukas Van Ness : Dealing with thumb injury
Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday that Van Ness is dealing with a broken thumb, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports. LaFleur did not get into the origin of Van Ness' injury, but he downplayed the severity of the issue by saying that Van Ness "broke his thumb just a little bit," per Demovsky. The 2023 first-round pick also did not participate in Green Bay's voluntary OTA sessions Wednesday, according to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, so it will be worth monitoring by the start of the team's mandatory minicamp on June 11. Van Ness recorded 32 tackles and 4.0 sacks over 17 games during his rookie season.
