Coach DeMeco Ryans said Jordan has improved and regularly makes highlight plays, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Jordan nonetheless finds himself in a tough position for the final year of his rookie contract, as the Texans re-signed starting tight end Dalton Schultz in March and drafted Cade Stover in the fourth round. They also have two fullbacks on the offseason roster and one of the best WR groups in the league, making it tough for Jordan to get on the field regularly as a second tight end. The 2021 fifth-round pick did well with his limited chances last year, catching 17 of 21 targets for 219 yards and two touchdowns, but there's not really a path to role growth without Schultz suffering an injury.
Scruggs has been impressive at the Texans' organized team activities, Aaron Wilson of click2houston.com reports. A hamstring injury led to a slow start for Scruggs' rookie campaign in 2023, but he ultimately shook it off in the latter half of the season. The Penn State product and second-round draft pick started six of the final seven games as a replacement at left guard. He has reportedly made noticeable improvements in the weight room this offseason and is visibly bigger, stronger and more mobile. Although he filled in at guard last year, Scruggs projects to start at center entering the upcoming season.
Hairston (back) was spotted practicing during the Texans' minicamp session Tuesday, Michael Wyke of the Associated Press reports. Hairston missed all of Houston's 2023 season due to a back issue, but it now seems as if he's moved past this injury. The Central Michigan product appeared in 16 games in 2022, catching five of his eight targets for 19 yards while also playing 238 special teams snaps. He's expected to compete with Andrew Beck for the Texans' top fullback position as the offseason progresses.
Tunsil (knee) is present but not practicing during OTAs on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Tunsil underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in February and appears to still be on the mend. However, the Ole Miss product is still expected to be ready to compete when training camp starts in late July.
Brown (shoulder) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp next month, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Brown is still recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum he suffered in the Texans' playoff win over the Browns back in January. However, the veteran wideout seems to be on track in his rehab and should be healed well in advance of Week 1. Following the Texans' addition of Stefon Diggs to go with Nico Collins and Tank Dell, Brown will be in the mix for fourth wideout duties in Houston after re-signing on a one-year deal over the offseason.
Beck missed Thursday's practice because of a calf strain, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. This is expected to be a short-term issue for Beck. The 28-year-old fullback is looking to hold off Troy Hairston (back) for the starting gig in 2024. Through 15 games last season, Beck rushed five times for three yards and a score and caught 11 of 13 targets for 55 yards and two touchdowns. He also recorded 94 yards and a touchdown as a kick returner.
Fisher signed his four-year, $6.595 million rookie contract with the Texans on Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. The second-round offensive tackle is projected as a backup in 2024 because Laremy Tunsil and Tytus Howard are under contract. Tunsil and Howard missed a combined 13 games in 2023, so Fisher will be a valuable addition to the team should such poor injury fate strike again.
