The Chargers signed Jefferson to a contract Friday. Jefferson spent last season working as a scouting intern with the Ravens, but he is coming out of retirement to get back on the field. The defensive back last played for the Giants in 2022, when he recorded 23 tackles (16 solo) and one defensed pass over nine contests. Jefferson isn't guaranteed to make Los Angeles' roster, but he'll have a chance to compete during training camp for what would likely be a depth role in the team's secondary.

Latest Chargers News
Tony Jefferson : Returning to NFL with Chargers
The Chargers signed Jefferson to a contract Friday. Jefferson spent last season working as a scouting intern with the Ravens, but he is coming out of retirement to get back on the field. The defensive back last played for the Giants in 2022, when he recorded 23 tackles (16 solo) and one defensed pass over nine contests. Jefferson isn't guaranteed to make Los Angeles' roster, but he'll have a chance to compete during training camp for what would likely be a depth role in the team's secondary.
Chris Rumph : Nearing full health
Rumph (foot) was spotted doing individual drills during Wednesday's mandatory minicamp session, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. Head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters that Rumph is still "working through" an injury, but it seems his recovery process is moving in the right direction after breaking his foot early into the Chargers' 2023 campaign. Once Rumph is back at full health, he's expected to compete for a depth role in Los Angeles' outside linebacker corps.
Gus Edwards : Injured, should be ready for camp
Coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday that Edwards (undisclosed) worked to the side with trainers during mandatory minicamp and that there's a "high possibility" he will be 100 percent healthy for the start of training camp, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports. Edwards' injury details remain undisclosed, and while it doesn't currently appear that the Chargers are seriously worried about his status, fantasy managers would certainly prefer for the 29-year-old not to be nicked up at this stage of the offseason. Harbaugh also revealed that Edwards wasn't present for voluntary OTAs. Following the departure of Austin Ekeler, Edwards appears to have a clear path to the No. 1 backfield gig to begin the 2024 season, health permitting. J.K. Dobbins, rookie sixth-rounder Kimani Vidal, and 2022 fourth-rounder Isaiah Spiller are all also options to compete for work. If Edwards ends up missing significant time this offseason, leaving first-team reps up for grabs, that could pave the way to a true backfield committee forming.
Joshua Palmer : Practicing after knee injury
Palmer (knee) got his most reps of the offseason Tuesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. Palmer averaged a career-high 58.1 receiving yards per game last season, but he missed Weeks 9-14 with a knee sprain and then suffered another knee injury in the season finale. After spending part of the offseason rehabbing, Palmer has resumed practicing with teammates and might be the safest bet to start in a new-look Chargers offense under coordinator Greg Roman. The team moved on from WRs Keenan Allen and Mike Williams (knee) this offseason, later bringing in second-round pick Ladd McConkey and veteran DJ Chark. There's a breakout opportunity for Palmer in the fourth and final season of his rookie contract, if he can combine the volume he saw in 2022 (107 targets) with the big-play ability he flashed last year (15.3 yards per catch, career-high 11.2 aDOT). On the other hand, he's never been targeted on more than 18.1 percent of his routes in a season, even though Williams and Allen combined for only 39 appearances (out of a possible 68) the past two seasons.
Alex Leatherwood : Gets deal with Chargers
The Chargers signed Leatherwood to a contract Wednesday. After starting all 17 games as a rookie for the Raiders in 2021, Leatherwood played in just four contests with the Bears in 2022 and didn't log any playing time last year after landing on the non-football illness list at the start of the season. He should have a chance to compete for a depth role on Los Angeles' offensive line for the coming campaign.
Trey Pipkins : Gets back on field
Pipkins (knee) participated during OTAs on Monday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. Pipkins left the team's season finale against the Chiefs due to a knee injury, but apparently, it was not too serious, as the Sioux Falls product is taking part in practice. The 27-year-old saw work at right tackle and also slid inside to guard Monday, while the Chargers got a look at first-round selection Joe Alt at right tackle.
Chris Rumph : Not practicing yet
Rumph (foot) worked with trainers during OTAs on Monday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. Rumph suffered a broken foot during warmups of the Chargers' Week 10 matchup, which put an early end to his season. His inability to practice with the team suggests the Duke product is still working on his recovery, but is at least making progress in doing so.
Joey Bosa : Returns to field
Bosa (foot) took part in practice during OTAs on Monday, Eric Smith of the Chargers' official site reports. Bosa remained sidelined after suffering a foot injury in Week 11 against the Packers and finished out the 2023 campaign on IR. The veteran pass rusher has been severely hampered by injuries the last two seasons, appearing in just 14 total contests. His ability to take part in voluntary workouts this early in the offseason should be good news for his health and the Chargers as the 2024 campaign approaches.
