A few thoughts on why EDI should be within the remit of an Independent Football Regulator from my evidence session at yesterday’s Public Bill Committee examining the Football Governance Bill 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾

Brace yourselves for a seismic shift in UK football fan engagement. Yesterday, the UK government revived plans for a new football regulator in England, by promising to reintroduce the Football Governance Bill. (Something introduced during the Sunak premiership yet unclear if it would be carried through with the new Labour government despite being in their manifesto) This bill will attempt to redefine the entire football experience for every fan and their relationship with their club. The question is are most clubs and leagues ready for the revolution? Quite simply, no. This landmark legislation aims to enhance the transparency, accountability, and sustainability of football clubs across the UK, ensuring that the beautiful game remains deeply rooted in its fan communities. One of the most significant aspects of this bill for me is its potential to unlock and transform in-venue fan engagement and monetisation, by giving lower league teams the ability to spend more on building their fan engagement strategies with a more even distribution of revenues received by the Premier League for instance. (The Premier League's revenue stood at £6.1billion in 2022/23). The bill will also mandate greater financial transparency by encouraging fan representation in decision-making processes and empowering supporters to have a stronger voice in the governance of their beloved clubs. In practical terms, clubs can leverage this increased fan involvement to develop more targeted and effective in-venue engagement strategies and activations and most importantly unlock further revenues. From improved stadium facilities, exclusive in-stadium and broadcast experiences to advanced digital services and real time engagement experiences - the opportunities are vast. Choosing the right solutions and strategies to do this are more essential than ever. Exciting News! 🎉 Our Limerick Sports Partnership SPORT programme has been selected for showcasing at the Sport4All - Innovation Summit in Paris this September! The SPORT initiative supports individuals aged 18 and above in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction by promoting positive lifestyle alternatives through sports and physical activities. Our aim is to complement existing aftercare plans and help individuals transition from substance misuse to active, contributing members of their communities and local sports clubs. Initially, the programme introduced sports and physical activities to those in treatment, whether in residential or community-based settings. This foundation paved the way for the broader SPORT initiative, highlighting the crucial role of physical activity in recovery and overall well-being. Missed this when it came out but - as ever and always - Richard is really worth a listen. He makes a good point here re sport’s ability to engage with government. And, if you’ll forgive the hint of confirmation bias, I can’t help feeling that this is one of the consequences of the way the sector has often relegated communications and public leadership to a secondary or even tertiary priority. Ie - rather than establishing the societal value sport creates and working from there to tell great, big stories - the priorities have been the next quarter or even no further than the next match. A body like the one established by the creative industries could work really well if we can coalesce around some common interests. That might mean looking beyond short-term public affairs battles local to some sports - like a regulator, telly stuff or betting - and thinking about which tides will lift all boats.

There's lots of discussion in the sports industry at the moment about what really counts as engagement. Is it a view, a like, a repost? Or does it need to be something more? To avoid being lost in a blur of social media and then onto the next thing. One of the most powerful measures of engagement being put to good effect by the Professional Triathletes Organisation on its new T100 Triathlon World Tour is participation. At six of the 8-stop series in iconic global cities, amateurs can not only take on the same 100km triathlon course at the best professional women and men in the world (2km swim, 80km bike, 18km run), they can also get involved in duathlons and 5km music runs. The aim? To encourage physical activity and build local sports community. Which is why it was so good to see more than 5,000 amateurs getting involved in Singapore this weekend, including Singapore's only Olympic Champion (in swimming) Joseph Schooling, who put together a duathlon relay team and got on his bike (doing 16km) along with Singapore's Health Minister Ong Ye Kung (also doing 16km on his bike) and Parliamentary Representative Poh Si Lan (2 x 5km runs). “These kinds of events are absolutely important if you want to build the sporting ecosystem," Schooling told Channel News Asia's evening news programme. "You see so many kids out here today. That's the pipeline right? That's the future of the sport. Not just in triathlon, but everything around you. I grow evermore condeming of Competitive Sport. We too often overvalue it to the detriment of our youth. Having raised two higher level athletes grassroots folks at our soccer club sometimes ask me for advice. Hindsight being a real liability sometimes I have realized I moved them each from recreational sport "upward" to Competitive levels seeking Better Sport. My girls each have a passion for motion and ease with physical literacy - agility balance, coordination and speed - they always have had. I actually think it's been the language of origin at our house. It stood out when they were wee so when they were old enough to start participating in organized sport they were often outliers. They soon became restless and even critical of teammates...and eventually recruited. Having been their first coach I participated in as much, and for as long as it worked for us, so I was available to temper their influences more than average. I safe guarded their mentorship for as long as possible giving each of their coaches copies of the 1990s Catch Them Being Good as we journied the perils of pre-LTAD youth sport. What struck me was always the amount of poaching over coaching in youth sport; it's disgusting really - but that's another story.... With both in their 20s now I can only say that we needed a pathway for elite level athletes more than we needed Competitive Sport. Running a grassroots soccer club now keeps my nose in the LTA(P)D progress of it - going on 10+ years now for LTPD. Our club runs PSO and NSO required coaching courses annually. The content extolls it's virtues but it's still not reaching enough Camp Chair Coffee Clutches. Too many are not happy until the BEAT their opponent such a word,..."beat". As I roam the fields watching my winters work roll out every team still has adults yelling at 8 year olds like they're watching a dog fight. I see well intentioned coaches give in and start up too. Likely influenced by the pressure on the facing sidelines or from other benches they slowly amp up to Joystick Coaching even when they know better and can recite the liabilities to the youth player of it. So what I offer parents who ask now is that I wish I could have just found my kids sport pathways that offered them a higher level of participant more so than a Pathway of Pressure. I ask them to put down their cups (I've been watching you; you don't need more caffeine) and participate. Give up their point of view and adopt their childs'. One of discovering boundaries of their own instead of seeking out the limitations of the opposition so they can Beat them.

The fundamental flaw in sport today is the obsession of winning A game; rather than - and often at the cost of - winning THE game. It's understandable. Generally - we are risk averse short term thinkers. We tie our egos to NOT losing. But "not losing" and "winning" aren't the same. The best student-athletes inherently understand this. To them, wins and losses are merely opportunities to grow. Taking on risk, learning from the outcome, and continually growing... that is THE game. In this one play, we see winning and losing of A game. But what is unseen - are those who are focused on winning THE game.
