Migrate subscribers from WordPress.com

Migrate users who have subscribed to your WordPress.com site to your Jetpack-connected self-hosted WordPress site.

Check the requirements

Before moving your followers, please make sure that these conditions are met:

  1. Both the WordPress.com site and the Jetpack-connected site must be connected to the same WordPress.com user account.
  2. This person needs to be the owner of the WordPress.com site. Being an administrator role on the WordPress.com site is not enough to migrate the followers.
  3. You can only use this subscription migration tool to move subscribers from WordPress.com sites which don’t have plugins enabled. Please contact support for help handling any of the following:
    • To migrate subscribers from plugin-enabled WordPress.com site
    • To migrate your followers from one WordPress.com site to another WordPress.com site
    • To migrate followers from Jetpack to WordPress.com or from one Jetpack site to another

Important: The subscription migration tool does not migrate “likes”. Your like count will go back to zero.

Transfer your followers

To move your subscribers from a WordPress.com website to a Jetpack self-hosted website, please follow these steps:

  1. Log into your WordPress.com user account and go to your My Sites page.
  2. Next, click “Switch Site” on the Site Picker, and select your Jetpack-connected self-hosted site from your site list.
  3. After selecting your self-hosted domain, go to Users → Subscribers; then click the 3-dots menu and “Migrate subscribers from another WordPress.com site”.
  4. If you have multiple sites, you will be prompted to select the correct site to select.
  5. Click on the “confirm subscriber move” button to proceed with the transfer.

You will see a notice at the top of the screen to confirm that your follower migration has been queued. You will receive an email to let you know that the subscriber transfer is complete.

Please note it may take up to a day for the follower counts in your stats in your Dashboard to accurately reflect the transfer.

Keep in mind that while your email subscribers will continue receiving notifications of new posts as before, WordPress.com followers will only see new posts in the Reader. They will not receive email updates unless they subscribe to receive those on your new site. You might want to post a notice on your old site about your upcoming move to keep your readers informed.
