Celebrating a Successful Seminar on Startups' Challenges in Entering Southeast Asia and Signing an MOU with JSIP 🙌 On July 31, #OISTInnovation hosted a seminar on the challenges faced by startups entering the Southeast Asia market, inviting three speakers from Singapore and filling the venue to capacity with 60 people in attendance.    In the first session, Professor Ishtiaq Pasha MAHMOOD from the National University of Singapore gave a lecture on "Winning strategy for emerging Asia." 👑 He emphasized the importance of localizing products and services to meet the diverse needs of customers in Southeast Asia.    In the second session, Mr. Yusuke Tsuji (Executive Office, ICMG Group) and Mr. Takaki Nakamura (Co-founder, Cross Capital) from Japan Southeast Asia Innovation Platform (JSIP) presented the "Forefront of innovation in Southeast Asia." They provided an in-depth overview of the evolution of the startup scene in Southeast Asia, the current dynamics, and examples of successful startups.    During the networking session, startups and supporting organizations interested in expanding into Southeast Asia engaged in lively discussions. ☕   We topped off the event by announcing an MOU between the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology and Japan Southeast Asia Innovation Platform (JSIP). 🤝 Under this MOU, JSIP will assist OIST-affiliated startups in entering the Southeast Asian market. Located at the southernmost point of Japan, Okinawa has great potential as a #gateway to Southeast Asia. Through this new partnership with JSIP, #OIST aims to strengthen support for startups looking to expand from #Okinawa to the World. 🌏 Gil Granot-Mayer | Anna Nagamine | Miki Takashina | Akiko Ishibashi

🌟 Bridging Academic Research to Real World Applications: Collaboration Between Startups and Researchers at OIST 🌟   At OIST Innovation, collaboration and creativity get us really excited. Our main objective is to facilitate synergies between innovators participating in our programs. A notable example is the new collaboration between Vyorius (Co-founder and CEO: Nishant Singh Rana), an alumni startup of the OIST Innovation Startup Accelerator Program, and the Nonlinear and Non-equilibrium Physics Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, led by Professor Mahesh Bandi. Their project, "Reducing Quadcopter Performance Degradation via Statistical Physics," addresses critical challenges in operating autonomous vehicles and was recently awarded a grant from the OIST Innovation Proof of Concept Program.   📝 The Project Battery performance is a significant challenge for autonomous vehicles, whether airborne or terrestrial. These vehicles often experience efficiency drops due to unexpected environmental changes, necessitating additional engineered components that increase weight. This collaboration bridging research and startup aims to enhance efficiency and minimize energy consumption by developing improved control strategies and systems, ultimately making these vehicles more effective and reliable.   💡 Join Our Programs The Startup Accelerator and POC Programs are currently accepting applications. While the #POCProgram is open only to OIST researchers, the #StartupAccelerator accepts applications from #entrepreneurs worldwide. This is a great opportunity to get support for groundbreaking projects that push the boundaries of technology and innovation. Apply today and be part of the journey to shape the future. From #Okinawa to the World 🌏! 🔗 Startup Accelerator Program (Deadline: 17 Aug 2024): https://lnkd.in/gXhYugV6 🔗 POC Program (Deadline: 1 Oct 2024): https://lnkd.in/d4vnZJuz Andrea Pensado | Daisuke Kaga | Anna Nagamine | Angela Ares | Pankaj Kumar | Shigefumi Asage | Gil Granot-Mayer | Lauren Bic Ha | Takanari Ichikawa | Ryohei Yoshida | Paola Butler-Zanetti | Léticia Berkate

🧠 OIST Innovation Focus Series on Alzheimer's Disease: Volume 2 🧠 In Volume 1, we explored the profound impact of Alzheimer's disease on individuals and their families and highlighted a recent Newsweek article spotlighting research at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology: https://lnkd.in/eEcjDhjV In Volume 2, we take you on a deep dive into the research. In a Brain Research journal article entitled, "The microtubule-dynamin binding inhibitor peptide PHDP5 rescues spatial learning and memory deficits in Alzheimer’s disease model mice", researchers at #OIST developed a small molecule that reversed early cognitive impairment in a mouse model of Alzheimer's. 🥜 Here's a summary of the publication in a nutshell 🥜 Alzheimer’s is a complex condition with no single known cause. However, several factors increase the risk, including genetic predisposition. These factors contribute to the abnormal behavior of two key brain proteins: amyloid-beta and tau. In a healthy brain, tau proteins support the cell's structure and transport network, the microtubule. But in Alzheimer's the #tau proteins start to behave oddly, clumping together and over-assembling in microtubules. This leads to a disruption in cellular communication. Normally, cells send messages through vesicles filled with neurotransmitters, like little boxes carrying messages. After delivering the message, the vesicles are recycled. An important protein called dynamin is crucial for the recycling of these vesicle boxes. But here is the problem, #dynamin sticks to microtubules. Since tau assembled and brought all the microtubules together, they capture all the dynamin. The recycling process stops, the cell runs out of boxes and communication seizes, leading to Alzheimer’s symptoms. #OIST researchers, led by Professor Emeritus Tomoyuki Takahashi, developed a peptide that is very similar to dynamin and can also bind to the microtubule. Introducing this peptide to cells means it gets stuck instead of the real dynamin, acting like a decoy. This allows dynamin to stay free and continue its recycling job, maintaining the transmission of signals between cells. (Thanks to Benjamin Heidt for this summary!) 🔗 Read the full research article here (open access): https://lnkd.in/g9qwx266 While this peptide will require further testing, it shows great promise as a potential treatment of #Alzheimer’s disease-associated cognitive decline. ⏰ Stay tuned for Volume 3 of our #OISTInnovationFocusSeries on Alzheimer’s.
