Reddit Is Down the Hall and to the Left is an image macro of Donald Trump providing directions to Kevin McCallister (portrayed by Macaulay Culkin) in the 1992 film Home Alone 2. Online, the macro has often been used as a reaction to Redditor behavior and is commonly recaptioned in variant memes to replace "Reddit" with different places and things.

Origin

On November 15th, 1992, the comedy film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York premiered in the United States.^[1] In one scene of the movie, the main character Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) asks Donald Trump, who has a cameo role in the film, for directions inside The Plaza Hotel.

Prior to August 21st, 2015, an unknown user captioned a still image of Trump providing directions "Reddit is down the hall and to the left" (shown below). While the image was likely first posted and used on 4chan or iFunny, the earliest found repost was made by Imgur^[2] user chaser66 on August 21st, 2015. On October 15th, Know Your Meme^[3] user AugustDay archived the image on the site.

Spread

The reaction image gained initial virality on 4chan in November 2015, where it has since been used to reply to posts that users disagreed with (examples shown below). The earliest found instance of the image being used is a November 2nd, 2015, post in an /sp/^[4] thread.

On October 5th, 2020, iFunny^[5] user Spundlyumptuous posted the earliest found recaptioned version of the meme, a Tumblr^[5] version that received seven smiles on the app (shown below, left). On December 24th, 2020, Twitter^[6] user @dan2mals posted an Among Us Musical recaption that received over 720 retweets and 4,800 likes in three years (shown below, right).

The format saw a surge in popularity in early January 2021 due to the Storming of the United States Capitol when multiple versions of the meme were shared on Twitter and circulated on other sites.
