The ending of Kingdom hearts III features the BBEG killing the generic love interest in order to enrage Sora.
Not only is this an example of the "Women in Fridges" cliche, it was also very underwhelming for those who were invested in her character. Despite being present and prominent since the first game, Kairi almost always lacked agency, and Square Enix had spent a couple of games building up hype for her role in KH3. So having her get taken hostage and killed off was REALLY disappointing.
